Apologies for the change of subject, but Putin has recently been even more belligerent than usual, so I thought it would help put some minds at rest by hearing from our UK Chief of the Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin.

Would have thought too that a good case could be made ( proceeds of crime) to seize the frozen assets of many of the oligarchs.This article (free) cites a wider article on bloomberg (behind paywall).

British intelligence say it is highly likely that Russia has grounded its A50 spy planes for fear of more of them getting shot down. (By friendly fire if you believe the Russian version of how the last one was downed). Bloody careless if you ask me.

Who knows? The problem with ethnic unrest across the Russian Federation is that it is naturally fragmented.
However, down in the Caucasus, the opposite is true. Ingushetia has the same ethnic make-up (in part) as the Chechen 'republic' next door, and they speak the same language - Nakh. According to one of the replies, from 2006-2008 there were violent attacks on ethnic Russians who were forced to leave the area. Putin won't want another Chechen war, with this time Ingushetians as well as Ukrainians taking the conflict to Moscow. That's not good optics for Vlad. Then there is Dagestan next door to Chechnya, which witnessed a mob hunt for Jews a while back. Konstantin Samoilov asked the question 'who will they go for when there are no Jews left?'. He answered 'they will go for the Russians'.

There are suggestions that these militants/rebels are basically IS or similar - Islamic extremists at any rate. If this is the case, will the poor people in these places be any better off under IS (or any other group of violent Islamic extremists) than they are under Putin? And will the world be any safer?

Yes, I read that. I don't know why they announced that. It kind of proves the Ukrainians hit the bullseye, doesn't it?
Let's hope that Ukraine finds the factory where they will be made.
Let's also hope that the lead time to build them would be long, the parts very difficult and expensive to source, and the Ukrainians employ the manufacturing mantra of 'just in time' and blow it up on the eve of its first test flight.
I wouldn't put it past them.
