The internet; Like all sources of information in the West since time immemorial, stupid people find stupid stuff, wise people find wise stuff.
That assumes enough knowledge to know the difference - it was much harder to produce and disseminate false information on a global scale prior to the internet. It also assumes that the ‘truth’ can even be recognised amongst all the noise and is not buried under a digital mountain of blah blah blah as to make it all but invisible - It also assumes there is no demographic bias in content;

The voice of women on the internet for example, gives rise to high levels of comment blocking, especially in journalism - eg articles about feminism and rape attract blocked comments as a result of abuse or misogyny which intimidates women into silence. The whole Gaza debate and any criticism against Israel for example is an issue where debate (at least in the early days ) was being frozen because the debaters or site hosts were being silenced by cyberbullying or, here’s another word, doxxing. Social media platforms are kangaroo courts where the mob’s POV is judge and jury - in order for wise stuff to be found on the internet, it must be posted in the first place - wise people are in the minority and increasingly learning to avoid social media for the sake of their mental health - that means conceding ground to the not so wise.

The search algorithms continually at work to guide us towards ‘relevant material’ on the internet, reinforces beliefs in a such a way that people don’t even realise the internet has become an echo chamber of their own making.

The internet is a fantastic source of information but the process of verification, cross-referencing and fact-checking is getting increasingly burdensome.

For everyone else, there’s NSC 😀
😜 NSC has a very narrow demographic.

At least it has, judging by the information the bulk of vocal posters have revealed about themselves. Muslim views, feminist views, Jewish views, LBQGT and Black/Brown views are barely represented. That’s not a criticism, it is a football forum for a Club in a comparatively white, affluent area of the Country but sometimes I think NSC members are under the impression that the POVs expressed on NSC are much broader and more unbiased than they actually are.🙂

I tend to use the internet mainly for wanking and looking at outdoor gear.

How would you recognise a black / brown view, a Jewish view?, LBGQT view? Feminist view?

What makes their views recognisable? As in, what differentiates their views from the other demographics on here?

How do I spot a Jewish view, for example?

You missed my point I think - I said those demographic groups were not proportionally represented on NSC compared to the population as a whole. What makes their views recognisable is that it is spoken by them NOT about them. Surely you don’t need me to say that the whole point of facilitating minority representation in society is that the views of demographics groups can differ radically.

Not really relevant to NSC (or UK) but you might find this interesting given your work

That does look very interesting. Timely too, We are seeing an increase in youth activity and street children on our patrols.

Thank you, I shall read that in full after I’ve had some sleep.

There's little worse than know-it-all expats going on about what's wrong with Britain.

I have a jaundiced view of the term Ex-pat ever since moving to Spain. I have found too many of my fellow countrymen have views I don’t agree with and at first ignored them. Then I started arguing with them about their views on immigration by saying things like “but you’re an immigrant” but wasn’t getting anywhere. Now when I hear the term ex-pat I say “Well I’m not. I’m an economic migrant.” Some of them look thoughtful, none have ever argued back and you never know, I may have made some think differently. I doubt it somehow but the fight goes on. :D

It is not just ‘rightwing bollocks’ - it is just as much a tool of the left as it is the right - in the specific context of my post, it has been described as the new McCarthyism - where free speech and Liberty is curtailed all too easily - where support is removed for public figures because of their views - journalists being sacked for supposedly anti-Semitic cartoons, Palestinian speakers banned or shamed for protesting against the war in Gaza - cancel culture is when the court of public opinion ( usually the majority) demands not so much the silencing of opinions but the people that hold them. ‘Cancel culture’ is the co-conspirator of the echo chamber.

If you want a long read, this explains it in full.

However, cancel culture was just one aspect of my post - the general point being that social media makes it very hard for potential voters to find unbiased information upon which they can formulate independent POVs for all the reasons I stated.

What type of person(s) is in the echo chamber on how the term “mother” and “woman” is being dealt with these days in the U.K. by medical people, no less?

Is this another political trend that has taken hold of certain types here and in the US of course…….

I think most people go about their lives just wanting to be happy and work hard for some of the nice stuff in life without giving a thought to whether the term mother is offensive. Cancelling the term “mother” (and woman) is pretty sinister and completely unnecessary. Whoever and or whatever is behind this kind of shit needs a good kicking by their mother first and the rest us after.

But we will probably have to endure this shithousery because here in the U.K. we have a dysfunctional political class that lap this shit up by the gallon. At least in some countries they will get a choice (although the comments are enlightening on democracy in Ireland)

I even wear a black pair for work.

Most comfortable walking boots I’ve owned so far.

i'll bite .....they know we are too smart to be poisoned out of existence , they tried that once and now Bill f***ing Gates has "gone viral" ffs admitting that they made "lots of mistakes" ffs  so the next step is to turn white people off breeding by finding the opposite sex no more attractive that a sunday morning trip to the cemetery , they will shove net zero down the necks of Europe , America , the west in general while birth rates in Africa and parts of the middle east are off the charts .....it's a sick joke but unfortunately anyone under the age of 35 is completely unaware and thinks its normal .....you won't get me on a protracted discussion this evening , it's been a big week and i'm f***ed....goodnight.

Okay, lets get this thread back on track.

Anyone know where the "freezer-truck gang" are now?
1. Still in hospital?
2. Being accommodated in a UK hotel somewhere?
3. On the boat back / returned to France?
4. Awaiting a boarding pass for a flight to Rwanda?
5. None of the above ....

No need for a poll ....

The latest news appears to say they all still in hospital, one is critical.

No I didn’t turn up in a dinghy but if I tried to do the same now that I did then I would be an illegal economic migrant, something to be despised apparently. I am the same person, this is the same country but the law has changed. Other people are denied the opportunity to do what I did and guess what. Net migration has dropped off a cliff and our wonderful leaders can’t seem to work out why the population has increased. Lets blame the boat people, shall we? It must be someones fault.
