i have neighbours from Hartlepool , Leicester and Luton . They are all in their 80's , they sit outside in the balmy summer evenings putting the world to rights , drinking heavily , all three are thoroughly disillusioned with the state of Britain and British politics , i have stopped coming home early because i get caught up in their too and fro and it winds me up no end .....trouble is they sound like a bunch of racist , homophobic twatts but it is difficult to argue with most of what they say :headfuck:
Oh dear. You would think they would be happy now they have moved to a nicer place. It may be a 'reaction' to homesickness - keep telling yourself how shit it all is 'back home' and you'll make yourself feel better.

Do yourself a favour, smile and wave and keep your distance

trouble is he's a very well travelled , well read , highly qualified engineer ....very intelligent guy , the fella from Luton was a town planner and Borough architect , both loaded , admittedly the guy from Leicester is a bell end ..
He's clearly well travelled, he's travelled to the opposite side of the world to the country he's talking about.

If he's a qualified engineer, he'll know that one of the responsibilities of an Engineer under the ICE code of Conduct is to not talk shit about stuff you're not competent to discuss.

Not something I could ever be accused of, obviously. :lolol:

the guy from Luton moved here in 84 and has free lanced to local governments , also an architect and has been involved in mine sites which is a licence to print money.....he also , it goes without saying , still receives his British pension as i believe he worked for Herts. council from the age of 15 and was in a managerial position when he left.....there are myriad opportunities once you get off the island.

The Tory’s have stolen democracy from the people and I will vote to restore it by putting my mark next to whomsoever means the Tory’s are closer to extinction.

British politics is completely f***ed mate , same as the Libs here , Morrison had his dumb mug on the news every night promising this and that , people hated him in the end and voted for Albanese who is the Australian equivalent to Baldrick ....piss wet thru mate , all, international govt. have got him by the balls , thats why Morrison got the bullet cos he told the Chinese and Indians where to go ....one year on 320,000 indians have entered Aus on conditional visas and are busy driving trucks , ubers , buying up light industry like tile supply shops and glass supply , structural steel , sheet metal , house prices through the roof because they all need to bring big money with them ...but .....brown people work cheaper , it's an unsavoury fact i'm afraid. The ****s in charge are all over it.

There's little worse than know-it-all expats going on about what's wrong with Britain.

And let’s not forget the role of social media - that can’t be emphasised enough.

It is all very well blaming election propaganda by political parties and media bias (and I do in part) but let’s not forget that millions of social media users ie members of the ‘electorate’, influence voters by perpetuating false stories, using cancel culture to bully people into silence, quashing debate and moderating platforms to promote certain agendas in a form of digital apartheid.

For those members of the electorate who genuinely want open debate and information to make informed choices - they are not only running out of options for sources of unbiased information but also running out of platforms that are able/willing to host balanced debates or embrace the nuance of often complex political issues. The dialectical process of gaining knowledge where exchanging input with others traditionally helps one to create individual ideas and opinions is being lost in the great echo chambers of cyberspace.

No wonder politics around the world is becoming more and more polarised in a culture that says ‘if you are not for us, you are against us’.
I don't know what cancel culture means. Cancelling seems to straightforward and unequivocal to constitute a culture. It sounds to me like a form of abuse of a group, like 'wokerati'. Are the 'cancel culture' people the students who 'no platform' people the don't want speaking at their college? I don't agree with them. Or are they something else? Is it simply yet another term of abuse of lefties by Daily Mail readers?

I decided to look it up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancel_culture

Something something 'criticising celebrities'.....something something ah! "In the 2020s, the phrase became a shorthand employed by conservatives in the United States to refer to what they perceived to be disproportionate reactions to politically incorrect speech".

I see. It is like wokerati - just a load of rightwing bollocks. Not a thing at all. Not a culture. Not even a yogurt. Fancy that.

"Former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized cancel culture in a speech in July 2020, comparing it to totalitarianism and saying that it is a political weapon used to punish and shame dissenters by driving them from their jobs and demanding submission. He was subsequently criticized as being hypocritical for having attempted to cancel a number of people and companies in the past himself" :lolol: Twat.

It is not just ‘rightwing bollocks’ - it is just as much a tool of the left as it is the right - in the specific context of my post, it has been described as the new McCarthyism - where free speech and Liberty is curtailed all too easily - where support is removed for public figures because of their views - journalists being sacked for supposedly anti-Semitic cartoons, Palestinian speakers banned or shamed for protesting against the war in Gaza - cancel culture is when the court of public opinion ( usually the majority) demands not so much the silencing of opinions but the people that hold them. ‘Cancel culture’ is the co-conspirator of the echo chamber.

If you want a long read, this explains it in full.

However, cancel culture was just one aspect of my post - the general point being that social media makes it very hard for potential voters to find unbiased information upon which they can formulate independent POVs for all the reasons I stated.

The internet; Like all sources of information in the West since time immemorial, stupid people find stupid stuff, wise people find wise stuff.

For everyone else, there’s NSC 😀

No worries, I wasn't having a pop at you.

I still think 'cancel culture' is a silly meme that the left and right (mainly the right) weaponize to denigrate each other. It means anything and nothing (as the Trump usage illustrates). It is not terminology I'll be using. I am happy enough with 'no platforming' which to me is a silly way to carry on, unless the no platformed person is a promoter of illegal things like racism, homophobia, etc. (Incidentally, I have never and would never use 'woke' either. But I do like a bit of gammon  )
