Funnily enough, my first thought when I just opened this thread and saw that post was "that wasn't underated, I remember Mark Kermode banging on about how great it was"

A stunning film that never had the commercial success it deserved.
Donnie Darko.
After its DVD release it became much more popular but was quite poorly received initially.
The constant Gardner.
Has climbed up the ratings in later years but was very much underrated on release IMO
Ripley games.
Got slated by many but I thought it was one Malkovich's best performances.

Had some commercial success but never seemed to get recognised as a great sci-fi/time travel film. Has a great pace and interesting plot that manages to feel believable, as much as a time travel film can.

Yes, I know they are separate adaptations.
I loved this film. It was quite hyped and then disappeared without a trace. I still rate it highly. Delightful film, if a little bit messy.

Massive flop. Had the misfortune of being released around the same time as Star Wars so didn't get a lot of screens. Ran over budget, didn't get its money back. Had a terrible title that made people think it was a fantasy film with wizards and stuff. It's actually a thriller and the name comes from of a truck carrying a load of unstable explosives across treacherous roads (big Wages Of Fear infuence). The original trailer does it no favours. The Tangerine Dream synthesizer soundtrack didn't work for the contemporary audiences that did get to see it. Lots going against it.
However, it's actually an excellent, gripping film and the soundtrack is brilliant.

Just watched the trailer as I had kind of heard of this. Never realised it was Friedken directing and Sheider starring.

Stop getting films wrong!
I think there’s two different lines of approach to this thread; I took it to mean ‘films that aren’t appreciated or as highly thought of by the general population as they should be.’
I suggested Magnolia because your average person on the street will probably not have seen or heard of it, but they’ll have seen (and probably loved) every Marvel film they’ve ever put out and still do Borat impressions. Therefore, and by your earlier definition, I’d class it as ‘underrated’.
Obviously film nerds will appreciate it.
