Seeing as you mentioned 'plastic', that Green pledge wasn't so much about spending money they haven't got as saving the planet.

Green investment to give us energy security to cut the £70BN imports in fossil fuels. Or you could try and give it away as a tax cut in a desperate attempt to avoid electoral wipeout...

The UK system is far from perfect but I’d take it over the US. Often it’s not just the last year it’s the last 2 years, you lose your majority in the house and then your essentially a lame duck President.

The way they vote for Senators is ridiculous, how can California have the same number as Alaska and Rhode Iskand.
But at least the US voters get to actually elect their President.

We get unelected Prime Minister after unelected Prime Minister. And what a useless bunch they have been.

Not only did Sunak not get elected PM by the country, he wasn't even elected by members of his own Party.

I’d rather he U turns and does the right thing, we shouldn’t be afraid of U turns, it means they are listening 👂
And on the very day the world hits 1.5c of warming, WTF?

This isn't the right thing to do and the public wants action. I really do fear Starmer doesn't have the guts to be radical to really make meaningful changes.

But when the only other choice is a drift towards fascism there is no other option.

Barry Gardiner has described Starmer's U-turn as 'strategically incompetent'.

I was disappointed with it, initially, but with that sort of reaction, I'm now warming to Starmer's change of tune.

If Wrong-Bailey, Abbot and Jezza wade in I'll soon be full-square behind Starmer.

Anyway, if labour lose votes over this, it will be all those angry green voters and the rest of the cohort who are calling Nicky Campbell now to say "I'm no labour voter, but Starmer has.....". Hang on......you weren't going to vote labour anyway? And now you plan to..... would you like nice mug of milky tea?

sensible change imo. cant deliver it, costs too much, other priorities. removes it as problem policy that could have been used against them.
Indeed.

I have always admired people who change or even ditch plans when circumstances change. I have always worried about people who stick to their original plan even when it has visibly unraveled. The notion the latter is virtuous seems to originate with Christian martyrs who sang and prayed as the lions ripped them apart. To many this is a massive virtue and the hallmark of Great Men, destined for a seat in Heaven. To others this is tomfoolery, pointless suicide by those who eschew going into battle.

Unfortunately "U-turn if you want to, The Lady is not for turning" has become an article of political spectator doctrine, since Thatcher rebranded inflexibility into the greatest virtue. I am not in favour of a world where political leaders never change their mind and never admit they were wrong, even if they are wrong now only because circumstances are different from then, or more data have emerged, or new priorities have taken precedence. I prefer this to the sort of madcap drunken casino politics of the tories over the last 13 years.

Must admit whilst not happy with the change from KS, won't be taking lectures from Corbyn and co. It was their presence that created the space for Tory-Brexit cabal to bring the country to its knees.

The U turn is not the issue so much as the bizarre ‘policy’ in the first place. Sir Keir has generally been good at avoiding the usual Labour Party own goals that lead to the inevitable cry of “How will you pay for it?”

The positive for me is that The Shadow Chancellor has been silent on this for quite some time - recently refused to answer on the subject and clearly has a grip on financing. An even bigger positive is that the leader of the opposition is listening to the shadow chancellor.

On a personal note it has sort of skewed one of my potential betting opportunities! Since the hugely expensive green policy was Announced, I had assumed it would never make it ….although I didn’t think it would get dropped before the election 🙄….and was expecting Ed Miliband to be a decent price in the “first cabinet member to quit” market.

Party looks at the changing landscape and announces change in policy way in advance of a general election rather than go into it knowing they can't deliver it.

BOOOOOOOOOO
The landscape thats changing is our planet, its burning.

History won't judge today's politicians well. They had a chance and squandered it

So now the green policy has been ditched where are we with clear blue water between the two main parties?

I think the Tories have f***ed the economy much worse than people think because of their astronomical waste on Covid PPE, Test and Trace and the catastrophic Brexit which has made our economy 4% smaller. We can't afford to do anything new or bold, like safeguard our own environment or finish off a railway line.

Labour are prioritising on no new commitments to put a further strain on the economy, but without bold initiatives this will mean we won't hit our net zero targets.

Nobody is thinking outside the box, and Christ knows they've had 14 years to think of stuff. For a start they should simplify the way tax is charged, how it is collected and the rates that are paid. Not only is it high but it has never been so complex, and they don't have anywhere near the staff numbers to collect what is due or help people.

I'm still confident that Labour will win the next election, but I'm not confident there will be any fundamental change. and we will bumble along for another 6 years with an underperforming economy until a politician finally has the guts to say Brexit has f***ed things up and we need to enter into a Customs Union or re-enter the Single Market to kickstart things. Personally, I thinks the rest of the 2020s is a write-off. All politicians seem to be corrupt, spineless or both.

I agree.

Starmer has made a huge dent in goodwill by U-Turning on the green issue. I can’t think of a much worse policy he could have dropped. Idiot.

But nobody wants to fix the climate, or even slow down the destruction. They can’t anyway. The climate is beyond repair. And it’s not in any politicians’ interest to do anything about it.

Someone needs to grow some bollocks and take us at least back into a trading union. But preferably lead us back into the EU.

Until then, the U.K. will continue to fall apart.

What a shitty mess.

Did he have a choice? There may be reasons.

Sunk has spent all the money. Don't blame labour. They haven't been in charge for 13 years.
