That was 1977. The year after. It was 1-1, last day, in 1976.

Finding it difficult to choose a single match. Spoilt for choice in the years 76-79 ( Walsall 7-0, York 7-2, cup wins against Div 1 teams, promotion to the top division for the first time….). 1983 cup run and final of course. Then fast forward 20+ years and the last decade to where we are now. For a complete experience ( and because I went with my son) I’d love to do Amsterdam again.

Superb question.
My initial reaction was the Charity Shield, but I'm put off by it being at Stamford Bridge. No way am I choosing anything that I actually went to, or in recent years.
I reckon I'd want to visit the Goldstone, and I feel like I'd really want to see Tommy Cook and Tug Wilson play so narrowed it down to early 20s.
Normally I'd go for a first home game of the season, to soak up some of that new season optimism and August sunshine, but instead I spotted this absolute all time classic.

Dunno. For some reason I was being pedantic. I knew what you meant.
I was 8 and didn't go to the match. I remember listening on the radio to the reports from the ground and Albion being 1-0 down.
My first match was a friendly against Norwich City not long after that. I've never worked out why they played these matches. It wasn't a testimonial.

The first live game I ever went to, just so I can find out who we were playing and when it was - Unfortunately don't recall any details for this fixture as I was a young kid, and my parents couldn't remember any details either when asked about it years later (they can't even narrow it down to a year / season)

Some that have been mentioned already would be on my list - especially the 3-1 win at Newcastle (probably as much for the journey home with the players on the 'Seagull Special' than the match itself!). I had been an avid fan for a few years by then and went to the odd away game, but Newcastle just seemed too far away for some reason. Then there was the win at Anfield in the 83 FA Cup run. Both those matches I had to make do with nervously listening to the commentary on BBC Radio Brighton (as it was then).
But the one game I really wish I'd been at was the 7-0 win v Walsall in the 76/77 promotion season. I went to virtually all the home games during that magical season when Peter Ward lit up the league, but midweek matches were difficult living miles from Brighton and with school the next day.
It was an absolute pig of a night, slashing down with rain. Again I listened to the radio - but there was no commentary, just goal updates. 0-0 at half-time, 0-0 with half an hour to go. Then two hat-tricks - Ward and Mellor. 6-0, and in the final moments Mellor had a shot that hit the post and Ward stuck away the rebound. All seven goals scored by just two players in the space of about 28 minutes.
What a game to have witnessed.

A major advantage of attending that match with a time machine would be not having to stand around in an underground car park for 3hours after the game.
Do I have an option to travel forward in time to whenever we next play in a FA Cup final (or any final for that matter)?
I witnessed it. Wasnt optimistic beforehand as Walsall seemed a bit of a bogey team, and if anything, had the better of the first half. Incredible.
