How long is Eze out for? They are both top players and stand out performers in an otherwise below average team.

If they are both out for a while I can genuinely see them relegated this year!

Olise now out for a minimum of two more months with his injury. Which is a shame :D

The wailing from Palace fans at this has been quite spectacular. We were literally talking at half time in the game about whether it would be worth Hodgson bringing him on for a game that could easily have been written off at that point. He brings him on the surprise of most of us, and then we all know how it ended. And Palace fans are using it as yet another stick to beat Hodgson with.

My point is this. Michael Olise is a professional athlete. He suffered a hamstring tear so severe back in May that he required surgery and didn't play again for six months. He's been managed carefully since then, and in fact came off in their previous game with- oh!- a tight hamstring.

The Palace medical staff have then assessed him based, at least partially, you'd think, on what Olise is telling them he's feeling. If he tells them it's still sore, or tight, then they tell Hodgson he's not fit. But presumably he's said to them that he feels fine. Perhaps he's desperate to play. Perhaps he genuinely did feel fine and this is just a freak incident caused by the fact his hamstrings are made of unicorn hair and angel tears.

Or maybe he, as a professional footballer with a history of hamstring injuries, should have said to the medical team and to Roy Hodgson when asked if he felt fit enough to play, "sorry gaffer, I'm just not confident in it right now". Take some responsibility, you know? We were all surprised Roy risked him (at least we were where I sit) but there must be SOME onus on the player here, surely? It's not like Hodgson is thinking "f*** it, let's see if we can put our best player out until April now", is it?

Went back to my seat after my half time pint to see him come on. Turned to son - 'we've literally just been saying downstairs there's no way he'll put Olise on with them three down'.

I have to admit to TITTERING when he inevitably pulled up.

They'll never disclose but his is muscular too, rather than an impact injury so it won't be next week. Guehi out too, presumably for a few games. Their only three good players.

A few media outlets saying he’ll be out for a couple of months. Potentially until after the international break in mid-March at least.

I sincerely hope they are relegated this Season as that would be so funny, but you just know they’ll scrape a win or two together (although I hope not)😀😀 The next few weeks or so will tell, so from me it’s a big KEEP ROY and continue this winless run👍👍

I don't see this as Roy's fault at all. The medical team said he was fit to play 45 minutes so any blame should be attached to them.
But realistically at 3-0 down why would you risk him? Hodson really isn't that good, we all remember Euro 2016, possibly the greatest ever humiliation of an England team

The added amusement (for me) was that he went full-pelt on a totally lost cause. The ball was 50 yards away from him, we had a covering defender in acres who was about to stroke a routine pass back to Verbruggen, yet Olise still decided that was the time to go full-on Usain Bolt in chasing it down. Maybe he'd decided to give it a proper test or something, but to twang it in such a pointless situation was bizarre. And hilarious of course.

There was just SO much to enjoy last Saturday, its almost hard to keep track.

All of us will have experienced an injury at some point in our lives. It is the individual who feels the pain, discomfort, tightness. Medical staff will always ask "how does it feel" and the player is trusted to answer honestly, esp as a professional sportsman where potentially their career could be on the line.

So, for me, Olise is 75% to blame and the medical staff 20%. Roy takes 5% blame for making a bad decision based on duff information.

It is what it is, we learn and move on. As the saying goes ...

On the medical team and Olise for being in the squad. On Roy for bringing him on 3-0 down. His heart rules his head on that one

He should come on if Palace pull a goal back, which they did. More important to protect the player than an up hill struggle against us.

I posted in the match day thread (I think) that if Palace weren't past 30 points by the end of March then they could be in the shit, their run in is horrible, they play most of the top 6 in the last few games. So they could be without their main players for the games that are the more winnable with them potentially returning for the tough games, this could get very interesting.
They need to go back to the tried and tested, panic sack their current manager and bring safe hands Roy Hodgson back before it's too late......

My son's comment at the time was, Roy clearly doesn't care as he probably won't be around next week. However it appears he has survived for now so will have to take the criticism.

I agree though, it's not the managers responsibility, player/medical staff. It would only be if both told manager they weren't fit and then he still played him that that would be a problem, but seems unlikely Roy would risk a player when losing 3-0 if he'd been told there was a real risk of making it worse?

We are a team who concede a lot of goals. If the medical team say he’s fit for a half not sure why you wouldn’t roll the dice. He’s their best player and given we’ve got previous for panicking when comfortably in front (see Spurs) I very much understand why he brought him on. Easy to say in hindsight that the game was dead.

I was going to say the same who knows what happens to the guys career from here on.

It was noticeable to me that when he came on he and Tariq were quit friendly to each other ,possibly both having knowledge about career threatening injuries.
That and the fact they were at Chelsea together for seven years!

It's just an absolute clusterfuck all round - and a brilliantly amusing one at that. All three parties in this should shoulder the blame fairly equally, I think. Perhaps Roy carries a bit more blame for wanting to take a massively unnecessary risk in a game that was 99% already gone. Even if Olise had been fit enough to play 45 minutes without pinging his clearly Will Buckley-like, limited-edition glass hamstring, it was still a crazy move I think. As a player who has really suffered over the past few months, surely you take a calculated decision to think 'yes, this is Brighton but we're 3-0 down at half time, with our best CB already limped off, so let's write this off and focus on the next few games instead.'
If he's been told he's fit to play a half then maybe it's a case of trying to get some minutes under his belt ready for the next game. Maybe Roy didn't think it was about playing him to try and save the game.

I can't help but feel that his injury record is going to have an impact on the level of fee they can expect in the summer.
Their fans are going to barely see him ever again in a Palace shirt, he'll have plenty of suitors in the summer.

Palace only chance of keeping him is if Parish does what he did with the diving cheat, flatly refuse to let him leave and keep him hostage against his will.

I suspect his agent would have insisted on a release clause.
So assume he's protected in that regard.

The difficulty might come, with a deflated market, whether any club will activate it for a player with a poor injury record.

I dont blame Roy at all on this one. If he's told he can play a half, then he should be able to trust he can play a half. If the roles had been reversed and we had Pedro on the bench and were facing a record tonking against our bitter rivals I'd have been fuming if he wasn't bought on to try and save some respectability. Very easy in hindsight to say Roy should have known better, but in a rivalry game should you ever give up and let a team just capitulate?

I’m sure if Roy could turn back the clock he would.
Struck me he knows he under pressure as it is, finds himself 3-0 down to us and all his years of experience is prob telling him don’t risk Olise as chances are they are not getting back into it, but looking at the bench is also prob thinking that is the only chance of remotely getting back into the game and with all the pressure he’s under he’s gambled on a player everyone knew prob wasn’t fully fit given his recent hamstring issues and it backfired. For Roy it was always a no win situation unless Olise came in and scored 5 to win the game

The majority of P4-1ace fans on the cpfc.org match day thread (couldn’t resist a peak) were in agreement that Roy shouldn’t risk him at all. Same on twitter. They all saw it coming. The most bizarre thing for me was Hodgson’s post match musings, saying he didn’t want to have brought Olise “all the way down to Brighton just to tell him to sit on the bench.”
Is that not his job?
