We agreed to sign him previously, and signed him recently.

The key bits of the press releases...

14th July 2023

The club has reached an agreement with FCV Farul Constanta to sign Romanian winger Adrian Mazilu in the January transfer window.​
​
The transfer will be concluded once the window opens in January and will be subject to all regulatory approvals.​

22nd January 2024

Adrian Mazilu has completed his transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion, and subsequently joined Vitesse Arnhem on loan for the rest of the season.​
​
The Romania under-21 international had previously agreed to join Albion in this window from FCV Farul last summer, and continued to play in Romania for the first half of the season.​

Dont blame Martin for saying that. Mighty frustrating to lose a 17 y.o Especially if he said was leaving to get more 1st team games. We lost an Academy player to Chelsea which must have been for more money and here we are doing the same. Dont know what can be done but does seem wrong 17 year olds tempted away

He had advisors etc etc. He...and probably his team of advisors felt his prospects would be better at Brighton than Southampton. Our record does show that too. I'm not aware our Brighton manager made a public statement criticising Chelsea for signing one of our prospects.

I'm also not sure how many millions Chelsea promised to inflate our lads salary, but i doubt comparing Brighton ,s salary with Southampton,s was such a substantial difference.

You have to draw the line somewhere though with the age for transfers. Otherwise we will be selling the u8s next.
It’s frustrating for sure we have all had it done to us as a club but the comments from Martin are a bit bitter.
To suggest Brighton is a bad place to go to develop is petty from him and reeks of bitterness. I’d understand if it were palace for example who have played hardly any u21 this season but here there is a clear pathway if your good enough.

Is there any evidence that we are paying him more money, or much more money? Wages-wise I wouldn't have thought us and Southampton were worlds apart. Maybe it is actually for footballing/career reasons.

Just possibly, like..........

Yeah that just sounds bitter. Of course he’s initially going to spend a bit of time with the u21s and work his way up. Not like we’re just going to throw him into the starting 11 vs Luton. We have a tried and tested plan for youngsters, which Doyle obviously liked the sound of, and Martin just sounds bitter that they couldn’t persuade the lad to stay.

He’s not 17 though, or a youth player. He’s 18 (19 in August) and a full professional, who we have paid money for, after reaching an agreement with his former club.

That’s very, very different from Chelsea tempting away FOURTEEN year old Shim Mhueka, with promises of riches.

"I dont think there is much more we could have done as a club." Well, except play the lad a bit, as you are such a big fan of his.
I have no idea if he will get any minutes with the first team this season or not, but as he was an unused sub just twice this season in the Championship for Saints, if he gets a minute on the pitch for us he will have had more of a chance here.

And Zak Sturge. Chelsea have been hoarding kids from everyone else’s academies for years.

So he wasn't going to get any minutes. May as well move somewhere that puts faith in youth, if good enough, or moves them on loan to create a pathway.

I might have this wrong in which case apologies to Russell Martin, but isn't this the same Russell Martin who didn't make it with Brighton's youth academy? Sounds a bit like a long held grudge against the Albion saying ' If you are going to say you are leaving for first-team minutes or you are frustrated, don't go to Brighton.” Sounds more like he is still resentful of his departure from the club and the comment relates as much to his own experience with the club decades ago.

Absolutely spot on, you can’t compare the two scenarios. I get the frustration from Martin but they currently sit in the Championship, albeit with a decent shout of promotion. We are top half in the Prem and in Europe. We have a proven track record of developing young players and giving them first team football (Hinshelwood, Ferguson etc) Put yourself in the lads shoes, of course his head would be turned.

I did think that - but when you think about it he actually had a better playing career than where Brighton were during his playing days so I’m not sure why he’d be that bitter
