Well my Czech wife is well happy seeing as I have now forced her to watch several Albion games. I'm here in CZ until April but am travelling back for this Friday's game and NOW she wants to come back with me because of George (Jiri).

The Czechs are very, very proud of their sportspeople. So many people in my office have been asking me about him this morning. daveinprague and Czechmate are probably having the same reaction. It's great to see.

Moved back to UK now , but went to see Brno many times when i was in Czech and the players seem to have a lot of flair , like the Russians , it's more whether he can cope with the tempo and aggression of the British game . I think he will love it and do very well :)

Quite right too. The days of players going out for a few pints after training are long behind us thankfully.

The game has changed beyond recognition. However, the odd pint or 10 before a game didn't effect the likes of Stan Bowles, Frank Worthington, George Best, Robin Friday etc. I suspect the results would be off the scale if that lot were required to piss test before training!

I read a player once saying that because of the urine tests players are banned from drinking Red Bull and the like, not sure if that is true. On a another point is he cleared to play tomorrow.if required.

Red Bull and similar drinks are dangerous.

Not all for good though apparently according to some. I was talking to one of our ex players and he started talking about the youth programme and how after a particularly bad performance he saw they were in at Lancing the following morning for their massages and pampering etc. He said if he'd performed like they had, the following morning he would have been facing a beasting over 10 miles of cross country 'back in his day' (which wasn't so long ago)

Drifting off subject but in the same geographical area......

As is their involvement with football in general. Sticking their brand name before clubs names in Leipzig, Salzburg and New York is crass. Okay, it would probably go over the heads of the latter as they and their supporters are a 'boil in the bag' MLS franchise.(yuck).

Leipzig are the only club in Bundesliga not to have the 50 + 1 rule which has caused much uproar amongst fan groups. Salzburg fans started up a new club a la AFC Wimbledon when RB became involved. Both clubs have had their souls torn out. Leipzig are considered the pariahs of the Bundesliga in the same manner as MK in England.

RB have supposedly been sniffing around Leeds. I dislike Leeds Utd as much as many people. There are limits to my dislike though.,

Pre match preparations have indeed changed. I remember going into the William Hill just along from the Hove Park Tavern one pre match. Three of the team were in there listening to the 1.30 from Newmarket or wherever?! They put on some bets for later before leaving to get changed. Would be unthinkable now surely.

Les Ferdinand: QPR tried to sign Skalak before Brighton move

QPR director of football Les Ferdinand has revealed the club missed out on Czech Republic forward Jiri Skalak, who recently signed for Brighton.

The 23-year-old joined the Seagulls from FK Mlada Boleslav for an undisclosed fee.

"We watched him and made an offer, but it was turned down," said Ferdinand.

"It was disappointing but we knew at the time he was likely to join another club. He's a good player and we would have liked him."

Skalak has scored six goals in 16 appearances this season and is available to make his Brighton debut in Friday's game at Brentford.

Skalak not in under 21 squad for game at Arsenal this afternoon - suggests at least a bench place against Brentford??

Albion (from): Walton; Doherty; Hunt, Barclay, Dallison, Barnett, Ward, Hutchinson, Molumby, Tighe, Starkey, Harper, Tilley, Deen, Bjordal, Ayunga.

This took some finding:-

Goal! Millwall 3, Huddersfield Town 1. Jiri Skalak (Millwall) left footed shot from outside the box to the bottom left corner.

Fond memories.

4 years on, and only 2 of these are still with the club!

Jiri wasn't a world beater but he was a really great crosser of the ball. He also scored one of my favourite ever goals (v QPR)
