Following this shambles of a governments handling of the virus situation, I can only imagine their handling of Brexit negotiations with the EU, who we have 'technically' left, but still subject to their rules and regulations for some time

I love the “we” Dave, you gave up on this green and pleasant land many moons ago [emoji23] Shame CZ don’t follow some of the rules of the bloc eh[emoji106]

I would happily go fruit picking, if the job was within driving distance, if the pay was OK, and my daughter could go back to school safely, without the worry of her catching this shitty China virus. Are you going to go fruit picking?

Your country needs you!

Get out there and pick or I’ll send you a white feather!

So that's a no, no you wouldn't

Yes I would do it, because I'm not worried about a bit of hard work. I'm already up and out the door at 4:30 every morning, 7 days a week delivering. I have been doing this for the 3.5 years, it fits in with my wife and daughter.

I have yet to see one post of yours in this thread that is remotely thoughtful. I mean this is another absolute beauty isn't it?

Fruit picking has always been done in fields in the country and the pay has always been utter gash. This is why we have, in recent history, ferried across thousands of workers from Bulgaria and Romania - they will work for far less money. They do send it all back of course, but we were always entitled to restrict workers coming in from newly joined member states for up to 7 years I think, if it was felt they were simply undercutting the local workforce. Your post simply suggests they weren't, as apparently you'll only do the job if you are paid above the market rate and the farms also throw in your transport costs.

So next year when this is all over, you Brexiteers will have no excuse. You can all get picking.

Maybe these work shy Brits who don't want to pick asparagus should get a job on the continent while they can.

In 7 months there will be no where to escape to...

I'm curious what would the hourly rate need to be?

I'm not going fruit picking because I don't fancy it for the pay offered.

Then, again, I didn't vote to kick out those already doing it, so for me it's a "Somebody Else's Problem" situation.

Lol.

Well, they are paying minimum wage so > £8 ph and Kent is easily driveable from Peacehaven, so you need to get applying

£8 - £10

Farmers pay the minimum wage £8.72. They get a specific sum per kilo for their produce, which means the pickers have to harvest enough to earn that amount of money.
One farmer recently took on 58 British workers, only 7 were good enough.

A very interesting documentary about British unemployed, migrant workers on the farm, from 2010

West is BEST
Between the unwelcoming anti-foreigner Brexit vibe Britain gives off these days and the highest death rate in Europe, I can’t see many workers or tourists bothering with the U.K. for many a year.
Unscrupulous foreign investors looking for virtually tax free environment in which to operate? I imagine we’ll see plenty of those.

My mate who gets his pickers from Romania pays similar, and yes they can opt for piece work plus they get cheap accomodation on site. Top pickers clear over £1k per week
