The Grumbleweeds were a collective, and not a duo. And it might even be a stretch to class them as comedic.
I'm out.

The Grumbleweeds are an award winning British comedy band, performing music and comedy. They were mostly popular on radio and television in the 1980s, including The Grumbleweeds Radio Show which ran from 1979 to 1988 on BBC Radio 2.

It has to be the ITV stalwarts and national treasures Cannon & Ball, surely

With the possible exception of Smith, Jones and Ruel Fix the Two Ronnies piss on everyone else in that list. It's them, Morecambe and Wise and Pete and Dud at the top of the tree.

I cannot BELIEVE Les Dennis and Dustin Gee haven't even been mentioned on this thread.

What has become of us ?

Yes, obviously it's my opinion, but I've never found any of their stuff funny. You could see the jokes coming from a mile away. It was before my time though, as I was born in the 80s, so I've always been comparing it to more modern stuff. I did enjoy the piss take "Two Ninnies" sketch which Not The Nine O'Clock News did.

Ronnie Barker on his own was quite amusing. Ronnie Corbett was just irritating (with the exception of his appearance on Extras).

I'm genuinely interested to know your opinion on the Four Candles sketch.

I have to say I'm disappointed crodo, I think you slipped up a little putting Smith and Jones in :)

Much as I'd like to agree with you, Crodo is right - this is firmly an 80s partnership. Just like Morcambe and Wise isn't.

Doesn't really do anything for me.

"Four candles" sounds like "fork handles"

As I said, it was before my time. I'm sure if I was around in the 1970s I'd have a different opinion on it.

It's interesting you see it as 70s humour. Big fat man / small man, the wind-up, the play on words, deadpan delivery - I'd say that - like Laurel and Hardy - it's timeless.

West is BEST
Fry and Laurie by a country mile.

Started on tv in the late 80’s but working as a duo on stage and radio for most of the 80’s. Comedy doesn’t begin and end within a 2 hour TV slot on a Saturday evening.

Four candles not funny?

Really?

I think crodo made a mistake including genuinely funny people in his poll and you've been whooshed, but given he is NSC's greatest alternative comedian, maybe it's me who's been whooshed?

I'm confused now, but such is the way with true genius

Oh. OK. I have often wondered why some posters think Crodo is a modern day EL Wisty

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDId8LBlXEk

I always thought he was some sort of pollster, or a mature sociology student with loads of coursework.

I don't really find any of these comedy duo people very funny, but I'm learning to not be patronizing, and have started to embrace the notion that just because a person likes something I regard as moronic and shit does not mean they are a drivelling idiot. I guess it's me who has been whooshed.

Edit, I have just looked at the poll again....and the joke is that none of them are funny. ??? But, none of them are funny apart from Smith and Jones (for a bit - about 10 minutes is OK). That said, I would imagine that quite a lot of posters on NSC like Hale and Pace. So is the OP just taking the piss out of people who like comedians he regards as shit? Isn't that a bit cruel? And pointless? ???

Since people love the OP's japes so much, I'll assume there is a theme to them. To me it is all a bit Schrödinger's cat. Perhaps' that's the point. I shall never know.

Crodo, we both know this list isn't complete without the 'Dear Ladies' of Dr Evadne Hinge and Dame Hilda Bracket.

From a gentler time, Hilda's double entendres add more than a little spice to the Edwardian party.

(addressing the audience)
"Put up your right hand...that's what it's for."

(on receiving a late Christmas present)
"A box. Just what I've always wanted."
"Well, you'll get a bigger one in the future, dear."

The Grumbleweeds were definitely a 5 piece as they all came out wearing matching tracksuits after the Bournemouth show to sign autographs.

This is a favourite, albeit from the '70s, straight from the Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club.

More of a variety act than simply comedy.

But it's got to be Messrs Barker and Corbett for me.

The Aldershot Brass Ensemble is a masterpiece of talent, timing and lyrics.
