[Albion] How many times does Solly March play well a season?

One good game? Do me a favour.

I suppose you watched them all did you?

A mixture of being there and watching the games on SS/BT... yes, yes I did. Knockaert wasn’t exactly miles ahead of March in his overall contribution to the team last year, yet everyone seems desperate to cast March as the sole underachiever last year. That simply isn’t true.

I appreciate that you are not doing Solly down, but the statement highlighted above does nod to the misconception that he had a poor season.
His Whoscored stats indicate that he was above average (6) in all but one game (5.9 in our 1-5 loss to Liverpool).

These are not the stats of someone under-achieving.
Maybe not hitting the heights we want him to, but a solid to good season.

I agree. My previous posts back that up. I think there’s more to come from Knockaert and March, but I don’t think it’s fair to highlight either as being particularly poor, especially March considering how inconsistent his inclusion in the side was. I actually am more frustrated by Knockaert’s contribution last year, but hopefully his end of season spike has given him belief he can make it at this level.

I agree.........On yesterdays performance he didn't really look match fit but it's early days. The lad has talent but he's the type of kid who needs support from the fans to get the best out of him. Not getting slaughtered every time he doesn't put in an 8/10 performance
Don't think he's getting slaughtered much. He's had a lot of opportunities over the years and barely ever scores or assists. He just isn't premier league quality at the moment. Maybe he will peak later, who knows.

I think he has also suffered from AK's success in our promotion season. For most of last season March was played on the left wing and that is his weakest position IMO. Much better on the right cutting in (same for AK) and shooting or running at the opposition through the middle. Needs an improved season or as others have said a loan to get game time. Has talent but is also a real confidence/momentum player

To many rose tinted glasses on here I think. Unfortunately he isn’t cut out for the PL, no shame in that. I find him one of the most frustrating players to watch, he has undoubtedly got a lot of talent but for whatever reason cannot show it on a regular basis.

He had a generally poor season, but time is on his side and PL level was entirely new to SM.

Let’s give the player a chance.

Given we now have AJ for that position, as well as AK, he's unlikely to get much opportunity in the right this season, barring injuries.

I don't think it's 'everyone' considering I haven't said anything like that at all. I was calling out your claim that AK had one good game all season, which is patently incorrect.

Why? Because you said so? I mean Knockaert didn’t have a disastrous season, but I can count on one hand the amount of “good” games he had.

And try reading this thread. It’s full of people claiming March didn’t have a good game last year and is awful.

Now it's on one hand and not one finger?

Just off the top of my head, I can think of 8 games where AK was decent towards the end of the season.

Check back through the ratings threads if you like which is a consensus of opinion, not just mine.

You seem to be trying to defend Solly by going on the offence with Anthony. Solly also had some good games, fewer than AK but that was mainly down to (lack of) opportunities.

Professionals in the club disagree with your opinion.

Expectation on wingers is that they should be tearing up the opposition. If they aren't, then they are considered to be playing poorly.
There is no middle ground.

Quite.

Personally, I think March suffers in some fans assessment, because of the way Hughton uses him. It isn't that March CAN'T attack teams - it's more that he isn't given free rein to do so.

My recollection of this could be wrong, but in general it seems that Hughton starts March in the games when he expects us to have little of the ball - when he needs a solid, disciplined performance from his wide left man. Then when we play a Swansea or West Brom and the chance is there to really go at them, he prefers Izquierdo's pace.

Horse for courses - which is fair enough - but it cements in SOME fans' minds this idea that March is incapable of being a decent destructive force.

I like March, it was the month I was born in and that aside, the weather is usually very interesting from a meteorological perspective and some lovely spring flowers are usually in full bloom.

As for the player, I like him too. I feel he's capable of something great, a possible season which defines his credentials... sure he needs to make the most of his opportunities and take any chances that come his way to make a telling contribution. Can he do this? Only time will tell...

He's a Hughton system disciple, as proven by his oft' superb defensive work. He is required, alas, to lay on and score goals... yet I believe in him more than Knocky... why I cannot quite fathom?!? but I found our French maestro a frustrating figure last season, all bluster yet nothing tangible 'mustered.' He's a peacock, Knocky, all feathers and pride, yet he needs to learn how to fall with grace to sit comfortably with moi.

If it was a choice, I'd start March and let him roar like a lion, rather than meekly defend akin to a lamb to the PL slaughter. In reality, he's most likely third/fourth pick but he will doubtless get his chance.

Take it, or Solly will seem the hardest word after all.

six feet beneath the moon...
there was times where knockaert was an absolute world beater last season, such as the man united game, which served somewhat to justify his continued inclusion n the team to some. There was no one game last season where march was the standout player, and when he plays he almost always seems to drift in and out of games, whereas knockaert will have games where EVERYTHING we do comes from him (man utd). That's the only real difference, and on the whole both were average last season, and knockaert did have games where he was more of a hindrance than a help to the team, like everton away. We need to see more from solly, but chris obviously believes he's capable of that, hence the new contract.

March really seemed to struggle with his decision making and usually ended up giving the ball away last season , i would say he had 2 or 3 decent games at the beginning of the season but really seemed to struggle once used as sub and the opposition sort of figured out he was no real threat , Knocky's greatest fault was usually trying too hard and holding on to the ball too long ......hopefully with the new arrivals we have a couple more players who are prepared to have a pop from outside the box ....what can go wrong ?? you either miss or the keeper stops it .....surely gotta be better than slowly poking it all the way back to Matty for him to smash it into the crowd just over the half way line .....hopefully we loose the rabbit in the headlights mentality this season ....bring it on !!!!

Decent and good are two very different things.

And I'm not, you're just taking it that way. Neither was exceptional last season (arguably neither was good last season), but neither was awful either. Yet one is getting a lot of criticism and the other, bigger name player, is barely getting any despite getting substantially more starts in a consistent team line up in his preferred position. That's the point. If you wish to continue taking that as an insult towards AK rather than a defence for SM, then so be it.
