Punk wasn't about anarchy. It was about dressing up and upsetting people. Especially Sherry's wankers, and old people. And going ****ing mental at gigs.
Like I said, it's people's perception of what punk is. And why are you talking about it in the past tense? Is punk dead?

you cant discount bands because they became popular its going down the route of im not going to like them now the majority do and it goes for all music genres

You've missed the point, putting up Rock the Casbah, London Calling, One Way or Another are not punk songs as the bands (the Clash and Blondie) had moved on from their punk roots. Nothing wrong if you want to include something from their earlier timeframe, which fits the punk ethos

Yes. I remember all the polite clapping at the Dome. Don't get me wrong. Wishbone Ash were epic. Family, Supertram. Well maybe not supertramp. Genesis, yes them.

And then it all went fvcking mental.

A mate of mine went temporarily blind while watching the damned at the marquee. My seminal years were spent watching the Piranhas, Wrist Action an The Molesters in Brighton.

New Rose was the first single, though. The one we all bought. Stunning. You either thought it was brilliant, or you were a cvnt. Simple as that.

I don’t write off the early/mid 70’s - Bowie, Roxy, some TRex, Oldfield and a loads more were good IMO. But there was also an awful lot of self indulgent boring stuff by classically trained superstars stuck up their own backsides, and dross such as Brotherhood of Man.

I know it’s the much written narrative that punk swept it all away, but it definitely set the cat amongst the pigeons, along with small independent record labels. Post punk, electro pop and new wave were all part of it.

Luckily for me all that was in my teen years, so I could lap it up, see the gigs.

It was more about who was in the audience. Metal band jackets vs punk dress isnt going to mix forget the message of the music. Same for Mods vs Rockers Teds vs both etc

Got to say for me the best years of music were from 1966 to 1973. Punk came along as antidote to the prog rock and endless guitar solos, easy listening USA rock and pretentious rubbish like Rick Wakeman. Sex pistols were always a manufactured band with Malcolm McLaren pulling the strings although they had some great songs. Punk for me was very short lived and mainly rubbish but it did show the way for bands to make music on their own terms. For me the greatest triumph from that time was Joy Divison inspired by going to a Sex Pistols gig.

I havent missed the point I still considered them punk as did many others YOU decided they were now too mainstream because their lead singer wasnt offing himself or whatever criteria you decided was still punk and were now far too popular.

Other music is valid. Punk is far from my favourite. But the big bang was big, and better because it took most pople 5 years to catch up. Yes, I am elitist and a snob :lolol:

Is it just me that thinks this thread has gone a little bit music snobby? I don't think all music belongs in a specific genre, I mean are Beastie Boys hip hop/rap/rock I dunno and what the **** are Rage Against the Machine meant to be. Or Prodigy or Linkin Park. Can you be a punk band and not have staples through your ears or a hip hop act who doesn't do graffiti and breaking? And Vanilla Ice, was he a proper rapper

I dunno, I digress, I guess I am not a purist of any music by any stretch nor care too much. I just like a thread/juke box/play list of good music which this is so I'll keep on enjoying new tunes from all walks of life like I always do and not have to think about filing it under x

I beg your very pardon. Some bald 40 year olds reliving their dads' youth is not ALIVE. It is KARAOKE and Tribute Acts.

Fine you believe London Calling is punk, I assume therefore that the waltz that is Golden Brown is also punk by your criteria
