Wasn’t Stephens a recommendation from Nathan Jones rather than someone Burke actually recruited? Sure Burke may have got him over the line but without that initial recommendation would he have even been aware.

Yes we can. Nathan did recommend Stephens, whom he knew at Charlton, and as has been pointed out previously, Poyet had targeted Ulloa & was just waiting for the five year qualification for a passport.

Stephens wasnt signed in the poyet era hemce why i didnt include him initially and in my opening post i did reference both stephenson and burke (and dont forget the latter and his role was a key factor in two managers leaving - poyet and garcia - and was dispensed with ahead of hughton arriving

Whilst the OP is right in the instance of a lot of players (and wonderful memories), Poyet made two massive errors that overshadow most of the good things he did for the club.

1. Pushing Murray out (to Palace) was the worst ‘footballing’ mistake the club (instigated by Gus) have made in decades and one that Palace are still benefiting from.

2. It was Gus’ tippy-tappy ‘Possession’ football that had reached it’s ceiling, not BHA. What a cruel and spiteful lie.

There does seem to be a fair bit of rosy-specs around Poyet and NSC.

Footballing wise I thought he was the dogs dangles, right up until Hughton got into his stride.
From then on if it weren't for NSC fascination with the man I wouldn't be giving him a second thought.

What Hughton has delivered to us over the last 2 seasons, makes everything before else seem dull, slow, and in GP's case tippy-tappy.

Coming to the end of his first year spouting off in the press that any decision for the second year was down to the player then at the last minute forcing him to stay, seemingly against his preference. He also resigned Seb Carole!!!!!

Cant disagree with any of this. When i started this thread it was purely based on player spotting rather than his behaviour as a manager

Any club making 30 or so deals, you should find at least 8 can put a positive spin on. Some of those were hardly stellar but decent enough at the time too.

Far more misses than hits for me but a very enjoyable period and good football.

Really! He left Bolton after the 2012/13 season had finished which was when Poyet had been suspended. He didn't sign a new contract that Bolton were offering which would suggest to most that he knew where he was heading before the season ended, probably from January 2013 when he would have been free to negotiate with clubs.

Unfortunately those who disliked him will always bring up his failings, no matter what the focus of the thread.

Some cannot bring themselves to say anything good, like all those backwards passes led to a record number of weeks at the top of the table, & winning a record 95 points in one season, following the previous one, by saving us from relegation.
