There's something about Aru that triggers a hatred inside me. I really want to slap his face. That said he had a good victory today but Dan Martin deserves more plaudits for outclimbing the main GC guys at the end.

That was pretty ballsy stuff from Aru though.

Is The Shadow trying to shake off his nickname?

Indeed it was. Certainly puts the cat among the pigeons a bit especially after Froome's interview on ITV4 highlights saying they'll have to mark him more now.

Guess who hasn't even had a stage bet yet in this Tour. I'm just making do feeding off the novelty told you so scraps for now

I'm struggling getting into this year's Tour route to be honest. I didn't even bother entering a fantasy team either. If I did have a team then Aru would have been my first name on the team sheet here. I'm still amazed I got 22/1 for him post Dauphine for a podium spot ( not that I'm counting chickens as today's stage and Bardet's descending on Mont Chat might be my only highlights yet)

I'll be amazed if Aru has the legs for 3 weeks of racing.
I accept I'm lining up too many riders to have a Porte day, and I'm being blind to today's evidence that many of them could be Sky riders.
But I just can't see Aru or for that matter Astana holding it all together.

I'm not so sure. From the overhead a bit further back, Damare goes passed Sagan at some speed already quite tight toward the barrier, I think this surprises Sagan who speeds up and catches Bouhanni who he's going to have to get around, and who has their moment with Griepel. I don't think he has any idea Cav is following Damare and makes a snap decision to pass Bouhanni around to the right, it looks like there's more space as Bouhanni also swerves. You can't keep your line if you need to go around someone ahead. That's why I don't think there was any intent, and you say had space on both sides, but he couldn't have gone round Bouhanni to the left I don't think. We'll have to agree to disagree on it being reckless enough to be a DSQ.

I've not seen that before. Your argument has some legs.

Brilliant from Demare though.

Really? I like Aru. Youthful enthusiasm, genuine joy in winning.

I'm not saying Aru will have the legs for 3 weeks of racing, but I'm curious as to why you'd be amazed if he does.

Granted, there's the lack of race miles because of his unfortunate season beginning, but the flip side of that coin is that he's the freshest here, and quite clearly flying at the mo. He even pulled out of Route De Sud and went for altitude training instead because he was further ahead of schedule than they thought he'd be for this.

Fuglsang will have a big role to play here for Aru. New baby at home and chuffed to bits with a Dauphine win on his palmares, he'll happily sacrifice his own GC to shake things up for Aru.

Having said all that, today tells us nothing much really or else we'd all be tipping Dan Martin for a podium spot

I will go on record now - Dan Martin will be on the podium at the Champs Elysees.

Not as knowledgeable as most on here about cycling - in fact not knowledgeable at all - but in awe of the level of fitness they have, which surely must outweigh that in any other sport.

I went with a friend a few years ago, because we were on holiday nearby, to see the Tour in the Pyrenees at the Col de Tourmalet, and then more recently drove to the top of Mont Ventoux a few days after whichever British Rider it was buried everyone else up there and went on to win the Tour. Astonishing what they can do.

:lolol: You've been spending too much time in the sun in Southern France again haven't you Pogue.

He is in stellar form, and I'd be as chuffed as the next Brummie if that ended up being the case, but I really would be amazed if that were to happen.

My gut feeling is that he's always flattered to deceive, happily beating up the second stringers but found wanting when faced with the very best.
He was all fur coat and no knickers in the Dauphine, which as you say may just be because he's lightly raced.
But to me it's just more of the same, him being unable to ride a winning race when he can't dominate the field.

Then there's Astana, a team more than capable of scoring an own goal.
Aru needs to distance himself from Fuglsang asap, because there's no way they can manage 2 riders in contention.

Anyway I know what you're doing.
You're guaranteeing your pre race bet on Aru...

...I'm more than happy to oblige.

Don't confuse bloviating with knowledge!

As shown a few pages back, cyclists constantly surprise me with their levels of either double hard b*****dness or stupidity, depending on your point of view.
All the crashes, smashes, broken bones etc and yet they still cross the line.
Cav yesterday, broken shoulder, smashed up finger, head ridden over, he instantly knew his tour was over, but still got back on his bike and rode to the finish.
G rode a tour with a broken pelvis!

The list is endless.

Astana - proven winners of 3 week stage races.

Aru - proven winner of a 3 week stage race.

Fuglsang - never was going to be leader over Aru once Aru was fit enough to ride, despite the joint leadership talk. Whose got the 1 at the end of his race number here? It isn't birdsong that's for sure

Anyway, enough already. You've lured me in and now I'm beginning to feel a bit grubby.

I guess it's genuinely part of a "don't know when they are beaten" mindset.

A few years ago I was sitting on an exercise bike at the Gym watching the highlights of the previous day's tour, feeling smug and thinking I could identify with them, then noticed the distance they were cycling on that day - 180kms - and they showed the graphics of the climbs within that. My smugness disappeared. I have more respect for them than any other sportsmen, except the cheats..... and I don't know enough to know whether that is still a problem.

No such thing as too much time in Southern France. I'm off again tomorrow as it happens.

And Dan...well, I realise I am being a little, shall we say, ridiculous, but I want to believe, as Mulder used to say.

And if it happens I can bounce the post with one that says 'Ahem...'
