Again, 40k is double the STARTING wage. You don't walk in to 38k. 55% of those in poverty are IN work. More people are using food banks because of various cuts, the rising cost of housing, the general rise in the cost of living coupled with the decline in wages. You can deny it, act morally superior because you are lucky enough not to have to rely on them but it IS happening.

I'm morally superior because, despite being on less than half of £38K, I have never even considered using a food bank? Yeh, right, that's really a twisted viewpoint. You really need to have a good luck at your argument!
55% of those in poverty may well be in work - that actually sounds quite likely to me; but they won't be the ones on £38K a year; £38K may not get you on the Sunday Times rich list, but it sure as hell ain't poverty!

Many European leaders despise May on the basis she backed remain but is now trying to engineer a Hard Brexit. She seriously weakens Britain's negotiating hand because she's political poison.
I'm just taking my version of a pragmatic approach. I don't believe anything can stop the Tories being elected and rather than see her negotiate Brexit with with a diluted mandate from the UK, I would prefer that she can go to the EU on our behalf to negotiate the best deal for us all with the visible support of as many of the electorate as possible.

There was the 'no early election' one too.

I'm sure there'll be others as Brexit plays out.
Of course they'll be all sorts of changes along the way as Brexit plays out. As no country's had the guts to do it before, there are no clear rules or precedents. If the EU turns round and says, OK, we can see we're never going to get £50 billion out of you without going to war, how about 25 - will you start screaming about them doing a U-turn then?
Or is it one of those irregular verbs, depending on who you like or hate?
"We compromise, They do U-turns...................................."

How are you not getting this? When hearing that some officers were having to use food banks, Rudd claimed that Police shouldn't need to use food banks because they are, on average, earning 40k a year. This is not true. The starting wage is below £20,000.

It makes not a jot of difference to me or my life whether I'm living under the jurisdiction of The ECJ in any capacity or not. It won't ultimately annoy me if I am or I'm not. Can you honestly say the same thing and call it compromise if you are?

It was devised and brought in to offset the costs in the UK. If somebody chooses to live in a warm country they do not incur those costs so why should the government contribute to paying for nothing? Nothing to do with paying into the system as per state pensions NHS etc and an entitlement to that,.

And if somebody moves to Norway?

It's just my point of view. But In your scenario, I feel we have a stronger hand with a bigger majority as it tells Europe they are negotiating with a united UK rather than just an elected government at the sharp end. It adds weight to the threat that we would walk away with no agreement and countries like Germany get lumbered with a much bigger pensions bill as a result. In my view, the bigger the majority, the stronger the mandate, the more the EU believes we mean business.

OK we are not going to agree.

I just don't think the EU will look at it this way. If and its a big if they consider the desire of the UK population, it will be the referendum result which does not give a ringing endorsement. Also the Government could walk away whether they have a majority of 1 or 500.

We shall see, but with the dementia tax, I don't think this election is a one issue election anymore.

No idea if that is true or not - but I never argued about it anyway. I was ridiculing the idea that people on £40K a year (or even £38K) should be using food banks. If Rudd said that police officers (or anybody else) earning £40K a year should not be using food banks, I would regard that as a perfectly true statement. Much as I hate to accept anything the average Tory Minister ever says.............

By the way, I noticed she said (or so you quoted) police officers whereas you have been very specific in quoting rates for police constables, the lowest paid rank, only. Given that there are thousands of Inspectors, Chief Inspectors,Superintendents, Chief Constables (and even Sergeants) who earn considerably more than mere constables, perhaps the figure of £40K for the average isn't so far wrong after all. Just a thought...........................

Without re-reading the whole thing the last few days have certainly seen a shift in my intentions. I still wouldn't really trust Corbyn to run the country and I still think of his little clique as bullies - that's the funny thing. But if we're making it Presidential then May has proven herself to be an ego maniac who won't debate her policies, won't meet the public, can't eat chips and, in the dementia tax, has come up with something even the Daily Mail are against.

Meanwhile Hove Tories have chosen a candidate from a dubious church that tried to "pray out the gay" and who won't say how she voted in the referendum.

It's all done for me. Moved from Lib Dem / spoiling ballot to Labour just to cut down May's lead. She must be the most unsuitable Prime Minister I can think of, and that's with her opponent coming a close second!!

I apologise if I haven't been particularly clear. The Police Federation's website says Police Constables in the top pay scale can earn up to a maximum of £38,000 per year, although the starting salary is under £20,000. Those in higher positions, such as Chief Inspectors, can command up to just under £60,000. However, members of the police force are needing vouchers from a welfare fund in order to "put food on the table or to put fuel in the car so they can get to work”. Rudd is dismissing this poverty amongst the police force and has a very questionable grasp of the figures worthy of Diane Abbott.

I actually think May has swallowed Steve Bannon's bullshit just as it's unwinding in the US

We may not agree on the majority issue, but I do agree about the 'dementia tax' and some other unwelcome aspects of the Tory manifesto. Nobody sticks to manifestos anyway, so why include the controversial unpopular bits?

Fair enough - we were arguing about different things. Presumably the Police Federation's website only includes salaries up to and including Chief Inspectors because the many officers in the many grades above Chief Inspector are in ACPO, not the police federation? (and earning substantially more!) There are also, I presume, premiums for specialities such as TSG, witness protection, etc. Rookie Constables do indeed start on below average wages, but I think £40K average for all police officers may well be about right.
Anyway, I think we can agree that Amber Rudd and Diane Abbott are equally electorally unappealing.............
