That was an era before there was a particular public interest in TV debates. It was deemed by many at the time - as still is by a large number - as an unwanted Americanism that puts personality ahead of politics. He certainly had nothing to fear from William Hague The first debate wouldn't happen until 2010.

There's many axes you could grind with Blair - TV debates doesn't seem like a particularly good one..

When I say 20 plus years, it was almost certainly longer, however, as it was the same old nonsense all the time, I stopped counting

Bliar - they don't come more lightweight than George W Bush's lapdog. Even now their flirtatious scenes at Camp David are parodied by comedians. But their lies led to the very real deaths of many.

Hilarious gags aside - There's lots you could use to criticise Blair, but lightweight he was not. He stood across the dispatch box from John Major, William Hague, Iain Duncan Smith, Michael Howard and David Cameron and rarely got out maneuvered by any of them. He made particular fools of IDS and Howard who were pathetic leaders in comparison.

There is no evidence that anything was leaked and was probably a naughty peice in a German newspaper.
Yesterday it was 'Brussels gossip' today it's the EU trying to bring down the UK and meddling in the general election.
Channel 4 news, 'we had a Conservative minister lined up to answer questions, but he was taken away'
Theresa May is looking more and more desperate and mad as each day goes by, but I don't understand why because she is going to win by a street but if she carries on like this she is going to scare a lot of floating voters to go another way.
I know the problems with Corbyn, but the public seem to not see through this woman, there is something very wrong about her.

The furtive barrister was good at debating, but led the U.K. into a war based on false or selective evidence presented to Parliament. Which is of greater importance - being truthful and open on important matters of state, or being 'better' at preplanned one liners across the despatch box?

I agree. Who knows how history will judge him? I imagine Iraq and other foreign policy disasters will overshadow some of the good he achieved in his ten years of office. Either way, I look forward to the day that both his merits and faults can be discussed objectively without knee-jerk calls of "Bliar" and "War Criminal!" because good or bad, intellectual debate is far more interesting than lazy generalisms.
