I hadn't realised the Walmer Castle and the Beaufort had changed their names - I'm so out of touch with Brighton pubs

Lion & Unicorn! That's the badger. Cheers

As for the Spreadeagle, that was further north, into Hanover. End of Belgrave Street. I remember it well as I used to live next door. Lively place...

OK so here's round two for you. The chaps from Brighton Bier are opening their second brew pub in the city, taking over the Jury's Out on Edward Street. But before it was given that terrible name, what was the pub known as?

I'm pleased they're successful enough to open a second pub. Good location as well given Brewdog is around the corner.

It was indeed the Bricklayer's Arms.

I believe there was a pub in the area known as the Hanover Arms (not the pub on Queen's Park Road now known as The Hanover) which is sometimes mistaken for The Greys, but has since been pulled down (correct me if I'm wrong though)

Next Q...

Sticking in Hanover/Queens Park, as well as the aforementioned Walmer Castle there is also the Dover Castle, on Southover Street. BUT did you know there used to be another castle named pub close by, on Islingword Street? Name that pub

I believe that as the brewery is operating at capacity they've decided their best bet is to start selling more of it retail, rather than wholesale, hence the new pub.

There have been some murmurs of grief with the planning application however (they're renovating the upstairs) so if you fancy supporting their application to bring a cracking new house of beer to the area, you can leave your comments in support here: http://ww3.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ind...on=showDetail&application_number=BH2016/06031

Personally I think it will be a fabulous addition to a part of the city that needs a bit of love. With Amex House coming down and lots of redevelopment around Circus Street this could be a prime spot in a few years time. Be great to have a proper brewpub central to that

I was going to say the previous name for the Earth and Stars but that's Church Street.

Given it closed in the 30s I'll allow it.

NEXT

Up from the Heart & Hand on North Road, now a cafe, and formerly the Drum Cavern, what was it called in its years as a pub?

The Dolphin

(had to look it up though, before my time)

P
used to use the Walmer Castle a lot. Always roast potatoes on the bar on a Sunday, a great old tradition thats almost gone.

Brighton has been terrible for renaming pubs. But has also done well to keep so many.

Eastern Rd used to have a fair few good pubs Inc eastern, great eastern etc and then into Edward Street that I read recently had 20 pubs on it once

Does anyone remember the Alliance in Edward Street? A cider house, run by a retired lady of the night, where you could get legless and still have change from five shillings.
