Now here's a comeback that could be huge. The Jesus and Mary Chain are apparently releasing a new album in March next year - the first in nearly 20 years.

Why are bands doing crowd-funding now? Surely BSP already have a record contract as have (presumably) De La Soul and Amanda Palmer who have both used crowd-funding to fund new albums. Does it give the bands more autonomy over where it's produced and by whom and how it's subsequently marketed or does it just get fans closer to bands?

An album I've been listening to this morning by a band who are consistently excellent is the new Wave Pictures 'Bamboo Diner In The Rain'. If you've heard any of their previous albums then you will know what to expect and they don't deviate from their winning formula - they remain innovative, very clever and witty lyric-wise and their musicianship is top notch. They are seriously under-rated guitarists and anyone with a penchant for 60s guitar bands seriously needs to get into the Wave Pictures.

It's a sad reality of our post-record buying/ streaming/ illegal downloading climate that a band of British Sea Power's size exist at the absolute outer margins of what could be considered a full time band. Since the failure of 'Do You Like Rock Music' to penetrate the mainstream, it has been noticeable that there has been less push from Rough Trade on the last two full length studio albums. Add to that that they have self-released a lot of non-album material of late which has likely given them their own distribution contacts. They've likely made the decision that given their fiercely loyal fanbase and long-term success with merchandising they would probably be better off crowd sourcing and self releasing rather than giving Rough Trade a cut to promote the band to an increasingly indifferent public.

Entirely speculation but I doubt the next record will be released on Rough Trade.

tl:dr - Financial I expect.

Here's the Spice Girls (ish) comeback tune and presumably there's a new album on the way too. It's just Geri H, Emma B and Mel B this time around and although the tune is okay it clearly misses Mel C's presence. We all know she was the Spice Girl with the best singing voice and this proves it.

Spice Girls lyrics have always been awful though!

My favourite is from 'Spice Up Your Life': "...yellow man in Timbuktu...". Aside from the racist overtones, it's spectacularly bad to mix up Kathmandu in Nepal with Timbuktu in Mali.

I think it's also down to the simple fact in the current world of digital and streaming record companies don't have much money, or want the risk, of advances these days. And bands have to repay advances so if a band self-finances then they won't have any record company debt.

Bands have also got savvy and some self-fund but license their music to a label for release.

The new Max Cooper album is a downtempo, glitch hop masterpiece. It really is quite beautiful and I suspect that if I'd heard it earlier I might well have included it in my top albums list. Just have a listen to this.

It's great to see Amiina are back with a new album. They're an Icelandic four piece (I think I've got the numbers right) and sort of a female Sigur Ros but they tend to use more traditional orchestral instruments and the overall effect is somewhere between Sigur Ros and Godspeed You Black Emperor (in their quieter moments.

If listening to Olafur Arnalds or Nils Frahm has whetted your appetite for modern classical music then this is another must have.

It's relatively short, 6 tracks and coming in at under 30 minutes but there's plenty of twists and turns with the records, even within tracks themselves, shifting from easy listening to psychedelia with ease and there's even a few meaty numbers as well for the head bangers out there. The album cover freaks me out a little and I'm trying hard not to dwell on that.

Have Thee Oh Sees done a record where they do poppier stuff a la Help or Castlemania recently? Frankly, I grew a bit bored by the endless wig outs (except live of course) I think the last one I really listened to was Putrifiers II (was it even called that?)
