It is still because of that reason. Southern want to be able run DOO on ALL routes (even those not safe to do so. Remember, the old crappy 313 types that run the coastway services don't have any cameras or mirrors for the driver to operate safely) with or without that 2nd member if they get held up on other services.

I would take anything the RSSB take with a very big pinch of salt after yesterday revelation. They're meant to be an independent board but are in fact made up of execs of the TOC's, so are only going to have their own interests at heart, not ours or their employees.

so those services have to be upgraded so they can support DOO. i dont know why thats difficult to comprehend, that until the necessary equipment is in place a given service cant go DOO. it seems there is an assumption that on DOO day all services will become DOO overnight, when there can be a rollout across the network.

and the revelation was nothing of the sort, we already know the membership of the RSSB, and the author and RMT have taken an extract of a research paper to deliberatly confuse the matter. re-reading Cash's comments, he's lieing to us making assertions as if its a email memo, as he must know its originally a published policy document (either that or he doesnt keep upto date with the industry).

What about the Office for Rail and Road, that reports decreases in the number of passenger injuries at a time when passenger journeys are on the increase and the number of driver only operated services has also risen to nearly 1 in 3.

RMT Press Office:
RMT calls for fresh direct talks with Southern's Charles Horton after he tells media he will guarantee a second member of staff on all services.
Following comments by Southern Rail boss Charles Horton saying that he will “absolutely” guarantee a second safety-critical person on all trains that currently have a conductor RMT General Secretary Mick Cash has written calling for immediate face to face talks to break the deadlock in the dispute. In the letter, Mick Cash, says that it was a refusal to give the second person guarantee in talks last week which led to the company rejecting RMTs proposals for a solution. It is the pivotal point in the whole dispute. In his letter to Charles Horton, Mick Cash says: “Our organisations have now been in dispute for over six months and we are now in the middle of the first part of a new wave of strike action. Our organisations have held many talks and discussions and I have personally met many of your most senior staff. Your negotiators have also now stated quite clearly that they will no longer attend any further talks organised by Acas, while your company has also now issued three legal challenges to my union’s ballot and strike action over recent days. Up till now – and despite my previous requests – I have yet to meet you face to face to discuss ways of resolving this dispute and avoiding strike action. I heard your comments on Radio 4’s Today programme this morning in which you stated that “absolutely” there would be a second member of staff on board every train. This, however, is in total contradiction to what I was told by your Passenger Services Director Angie Doll at a meeting on 6th October. To explore your comments further, therefore, and to break the obvious deadlock that our organisations have reached during this dispute, it is imperative that we both meet personally to find a way to end this dispute and get your services running to the benefit of both your staff and the travelling public. We really must end the war of words being waged over the media and sit down together to resolve this issue and your comments this morning provide an opportunity to do just that. I therefore look forward to a positive response to my request for a meeting as a matter of extreme urgency and your urgent confirmation that you are now guaranteeing a second member of staff on board every train.” ENDS

Let's see if Horton was just lying to the media again or if he means it.

Ending the war of words being waged over the media by releasing more words over the media. Genius.

It's gone so far now that its way beyond GTR v RMT.

It's now all about DfT and wider government just sitting back and allowing/encouraging economic devastation to be visited on an entire region of the country. Fully to be expected of the thoroughly wicked Thatcher regime, but this current Tory lot are equally nasty, just a whole lot more SLY. Bring on the next opportunity to vote these cvnts out of power. They represent absolutely nobody except themselves and their senior stakeholders.

quite, but they are worse than Thatcher's thieving evil regime, you learn by the mistakes you make, they are sly enough to ensure they never get voted out.

Done a Frexit, now in London
Southern.. introducing driver-only operation and wants conductors to accept new on-board supervisor positions.

Most train services I've been on are driver-only. They don't have an on board conductor. There is someone at a station to signal when it is safe to leave. Like on the underground.

I must admit, I've not read through all 346 pages of this so don't know if this is the big issue or one of many, and my only interest is when I try to get to/from home games whilst I'm in London (like this weekend)

What on earth has this got to do with Thatcher. I travel on trains here and abroad with just driver no problem. Dealing with Mick Cash is going back to Scargill days

Thatcher's government deliberately withheld investment in British Rail for YEARS. Go back and learn your history.

Hi all, I rarely use the train and that applies more so during a strike but this coming Monday (17th) I need to be at Victoria for half 8 for some work I'm doing. The following evening, I'll be coming back from Redhill around half 8/9.

Am I gonna be able to do this or do I need to break open my piggy bank for a taxi?

If a GE was tomorrow they'd win my an even bigger margin I'm afraid.

Have you been drinking? Considering that millions vote Tory, that is a very strange remark, even by NSC standards, as you said on another thread. And you think that the next election will see the Tories lose - to Corbyn?!

That is fine but as many stations are now unmanned and SASTA are removing even the ticket office staff from stations, there is nobody on the platform to check that it is safe for the train to leave..

A colleague at work was back in the UK to renew his US visa. He needed to be at the US Embassy early but was considering staying with friends in Brighton and getting an early train. I told him to book a hotel in London as you couldn’t risk relying on SASTA for an important appointment – glad I did. As the late great Terry Thomas would say – “they really are an absolute shower”
