Could you be arsed? This constant demand by people desperate to try and make a quick buck by demanding compensation for everything and anything just drives up the prices for everyone else. Did he get whiplash when they took off too?

What's the point of an holiday if you are going to give yourself a coronary pressing 3 for customer services for five days when you get home, to claw back a few quid because a plane was three hours late. Don't get it myself.

A couple, maybe one smile letter will do it.

Not sure what is a few quid to you, but if this is a family of 4, they will be due €2000

A mate's wife was in labour, she was expected to give birth at 9.30am on a Tuesday, because of this I booked the coach to get us both to the Amex for a game that evening. She subsequently gave birth at 19.45pm on the Tuesday. He didn't show up at my house for us to walk to the coach. I tried phoning him on numerous occasions, left messages, sent texts and heard nothing. As a result I missed the coach (which departed 1 minute early) and I had to drive.
My question is this, who do I sue? My mate, his wife, the hospital for not allowing him to use a phone in the theatre, or Seagull travel for leaving early?

With easyjet you don't even need to write a letter, they have their own EU rule 261/2004 claim form on their website - just fill it in with flight details and the names of the passengers.
We were recently delayed just over 3 hours returning from Pisa and got €250 each (family of 4) it look less than 5 mins to do, they confirmed the claim in 2 days and we got a cheque for £848 which nearly covered the entire flight costs!

That depends if you think taking two grand off someone for a three hour delay is reasonable or not, or whether you do it just because you can and you could do with the cash.

Given how airline companies are still breaking the law ripping customers off with credit card fees, and getting away with it, I don't think I'm going to be crying a river for them anytime soon! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/08/11/budget-airlines-breaking-the-law-by-charging-holidaymakers-rip-o/

Or, you could just accept that sometimes planes are delayed, a lot of the time for safety reasons.

Who do you think will pay these fines?

Increase of airfare.

I would agree with Kinky Gerbils above had jt been the only problem. This is only 1 aspect of a bad 10 day holiday that cost over £1000 each for a family of four. Mum dad and young teenage children. He says it was a poor holiday and not what he expected for an all inclusive holiday and wont use Thomas Cook again. So I think if he can get some compensation he should go for it.

Timely piece on the BBC website today, mainly about Gatwick being, unsurprisingly, the airport with the most delays due to having the most flights, therefore most impacted by external factors. Includes a section on flight delay compensation rules:

'Delay compensation: Your rights

There are different rules for compensation for delays depending on the length of the flight and its destination.

To be covered by the law flights have to depart from or be flying to either a European Union country or Iceland, Norway or Switzerland.

For a short-haul flight, covering less than 1,500km (932 miles), passengers can claim £215 (€250) if the delay was more than three hours and it was the fault of the airline.

For medium-haul flights, covering between 1,500km and 3,500km (2,175 miles), the compensation is £345 (€400).

For long-haul flights, a delay of three to four hours means compensation of €300. Anyone delayed more than four hours can claim £517 (€600).

Me and my GF got €600 off easy jet all done by email.

Out of interest chaps how long did it take them to send you the money?

I got bumped off a flight to Gatwick coming back from Milan. They managed to get me on a flight back to Luton 4 hours later. Was eligible for €260. All very straight forward to apply for as you mention and it was approved within a week.....however it took them 3 months and numerous phone calls to their customer services to send me a cheque.

We are already paying over the odds due to taxes, YQ, fuel charges etc. You don't see the airlines adjusting down sky high fuel charges when oil is at an all time low do you ?

BA made nearly £945M profit... not sure them paying out compensation they have to under EU ruling will affect them too much.

It wont, because they will up the fare costing - Certain airlines are fighting the tax costings.

Depending on if the airline has hedges fuel costs you do see a lower fare, look at Norwegian airways, they didnt and are able to offer really low fares as the oil costs dropped.

Or you will see short cuttings on safety as the pressure on the ground crews are increased.

Son and family just returned from holiday in Tenerife and had a delay going out with Thomas Cook who overcame the flight delay compensation by them boarding the plane after a delay of 2 hrs 48 mins (the limit for compo is 3 hrs) they then kept them on the plane awaiting a take off slot for 2 hours thus avoiding compensation.

It probably wasn't a take off slot they were waiting for it was a landing slot. Isn't it really a case they were put on the plane in case a slot opened up which they could then take. This is what happened to us coming back from Croatia a few weeks ago, the plane was a bit late landing and we were told once we had boarded it would be an hour until take off, then a landing slot opened and we took off after only 20 minutes or so.
