Love the FA Cup but the League Cup has always been Mickey mouse. Play lots of development youngsters.

Certainly that's the case in recent times. In the 60s/70s it attracted huge interest. For example Brighton's run in 1976 after Southend in R1 which incidentally was over two legs we knocked out Ipswich and WBA before a replay at Derby saw it end. Huge support at all matches.

There has to be an argument that we want to get off to a flyer next season, not suffer a hangover from how last season finished so a first home game of the season win in front of a raucous home audience would be the ideal scenario, especially considering the tough nature of our opening game. Therefore I'd be playing a near full strength team with 2-3 changes max and trying to get Colchester to agree to a reduced ticket price to get the place packed.

Surprised they've not announced ticket details for this one yet. Must be some negotiations with Colchester on what is a fair price.

Even with our first home league game on the friday night?

Doug Loft signed today and Dickenson earlier in the week. Looking at Colchester's website, it said Loft played 49 times for us. I didn't realise it was that many.

Remember him winning the Man of the Match award in a 1-5 home defeat to Stoke at Withdean, last game of one season there - about 2005-6 I think - despite only coming on after about 70 minutes.

Ran around showing more enthusiasm than the rest of the team combined to that point, and scored our goal. One of those days where the players simply don't want to be there any more. I liked Loft, and he's done OK for himself at Port Vale and Gillingham.

That was about the worst performance ever at Withdean (although there were a number). I think we'd already got relegated from the Championship and the players didn't look bothered. We were lucky to lose 5-1 from memory!

Forgive me for saying it, but we had two games with Walsall which were just as bad, obviously THAT one but also a 1-1, Elphick for us and Demontagnac lashed one in shortly after - the only things that happened in the game. Pathetic spectacle.

The Stoke game was remarkable, only Henderson really cared but he was too poor to do anything about it.

£12 for adults.

Excellent offer by the club, and well done to Colchester as they may lose some revenue this way and it's a long way down on their matchday admission prices.

Surely a bumper audience for this now 15,000-20,000 for me, even more with a few signings and a bumper away following.
