[Albion] Daily Mail reporting Albion have rejected £4m from Burnley for Dale Stephens

The recent friendlies I presume. He's been pretty decent, but then he always was a good footballer. It's only when we start it for real on the 6th that we'll see why he won't ever feature in our plans.

So he's decent and played well in the friendlies but won't play in the league? Not sure I understand the logic but I'm sure you can enlighten me

- He has featured in the friendlies and was injured. I saw it. But obviously didn't realise it was , presumably on purpose, as a cloudscreen for transfer negotiations to take place.
- Big fee rumours aren't circulating. They're fact. And we've turned down 2 offers. There haven't as yet been anymore.
- We would stop a player being sold. In fact we've sold no first team player in the last 2 years.
- He hasn't "gone".

Hope he isn't going and yes not the end of the world although he was part of a 2 part midfield last season that was envy of the championship. Perhaps the club have decided to keep the two together unless silly money is involved. It hasn't yet.
Luckily they're holding their nerve...

Fair enough, hope you are right. I like Stephens, great player but the fees that have been mentioned would be VERY difficult to turn down and I just think his injury is a convenient smokescreen so the player does not have to play......he's gone! Leo style.

If it was Leo style. He'd have been whisked up to Lancashire in a taxi 48 hours ago. Instead he was er, at home in Hassocks on Saturday (according to reports on here), the club are saying he's playing on Tuesday and there are various reports saying we rejected the last offer from Burnley over a week ago.

3rd bid from burnley rejected and another club in for Stephens according to the argus. He's a goner. Just a matter of time.

Its not just a matter of time though is it? Its a matter of the money being right too. If the bids dont reach the level we find acceptable he stays.

It is a matter of time - player will be unsettled now. One year left on contract we would be mad not to accept a bid of around £5m.

I think we will sell, but for more than that. We will hold out for £6m I'd say.

Reminding me very much like the Dunk situation last summer with Fulham.

Expect Dale to sign a new improved contract very soon

He needs to refuse to play in a game first doesn't he?

If that does prove to be the case then it can only be a good thing that another club has come in for him, as it should force the price received up. If Stephens does go (which is looking more and more likely), my only hope is that the club has planned ahead for this scenario and that an equally as good replacement has already been lined up.

The Argus

"The Argus understands the Seagulls have firmly rejected a total of four offers for Stephens, whose absence from pre-season action on Saturday set alarm bells ringing among fans."

Hughton

“One thing I can categorically say is he wanted to play (on Saturday). It was us who stopped him because we felt we would give him the extra day on the recovery.”

We needed another quality midfielder anyway and this may mean we'll need two which isn't good with the season kicking off soon.
I don't see sidwell giving us the quality required for a long season and I hope we've got some quality lined up :)

Much though I rate Stephens if we get a bid of £10m for a player with a year left on his contract we'd be insane not to take it. Were not in the PL and cannot spunk that sort of money by keeping him for the final year. Even with these exchange rates £10m could buy a very, very good player from the continent

Agree it's a massive amount for let's be honest a decent championship midfielder...he's good but no way better than kayal.

Whatever owners/managers say every player has a price. Stephens is a very good player at our level but is not irreplaceable if the money is right and given there is only a year on his contract.

Burnley have got rid of Barton and must now be getting desperate to find a replacement . They either have to look elsewhere or keep upping the ante
