David Cameron made a late appeal to Germany's Angela Merkel for limits on free movement of people if the UK voted Remain, BBC Newsnight has learned.

......Mr Cameron telephoned the German chancellor to ask whether she would be willing to issue a statement with fellow EU leaders granting the UK concessions on free movement.

Under the plan, thrashed out at a meeting in Downing Street, the president of France Francois Hollande, the European Council president Donald Tusk and the European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker would all put their names to the joint statement by EU leaders.

The idea of a joint statement by EU leaders was eventually shelved.

....One Downing Street source told Newsnight: "Fundamentally a question was put to the British public - would you be willing to be a little bit poorer to get control of immigration? We staked our chips on everyone going, 'Well, I don't want to be poorer.' They staked their chips on everyone going, 'I want to control immigration,' and they won."

If only ...

Again it just proves that the government and previous government did not listen to the people. Also proves that Angie was pulling the strings on immigration here.

Why was it shelved? I do hold the weak tea offered to us by Brussels as a major contributor to what I will term 'The Disaster'.

Newsnight understands that at an EU summit after the EU referendum the German chancellor made it clear to Mr Cameron that there could be no compromise for EU members on rules governing the free movement of people.

I seem to remember he asked for similar concessions in the 'substantial' negotiations pre referendum but was told no by Merkel. So basically Inflexibility by our European friends?

Serves em right .... #takebackcontrol

Exactly, a sad state of affairs when a UK PM has to go cap in hand to other governments to try and regain a bit more control of our borders.

So you voted for everyone in the UK to be poorer. You must be so proud meanwhile the rest of us are having to make changes to our living standards.

Why was it shelved?

presumably intransigence on the issue from the EU leaders, to the point where they dont even enforce the rules but allow a policy of looser migration within the EU than specified in the treaties. witness the adhoc policy to Syrian refugees, ignoring the rule book that say they should be processed where landed, and allowing them free passage to anywhere they wish. same goes for EU migrants, we are only entitled to free movment on the basis of being self funded, yet when Cameron asked to restrict benefits from EU migrants, a policy that should already apply under the treaties in place, he was shot down by EU leaders.

once again, have to point out that the Remain camp never made the case for being in the EU, and this is an example where they could have addressed concerns over imigration by advocating the benefits of EU members coming here. instead they ignored the issue and focued on economics, when EU wasnt really an issue about economics.

Don't try the guilt trip, looks like you just want to look after yourself now, instead of looking to the future. Worried about YOUR savings are you.....well mine have dipped also, still a price worth paying for a free from EU superstate......in my opinion.

Take back control of vague notion of sovereignty, lose control of household budgets. It hits the poorest hardest

It has been a month today since the vote, how have the "household budgets" and the " poorest hardest " hit already, it may happen but stirring it up days and now weeks after the vote is scaremongering.

It's because sensibly we haven't started the exit process. This is what has happened so far:

Brexiteers win referendum
Markets crash
Brexiteers don't trigger Brexit
Markets recover
Brexiteers say markets like Brexit

Its not deflection when i dont know what you are banging on about( re Norway figures).
i cant keep repeating myself,i have no idea what it is i didnt comment on in the first place.

No i dont know your thinking, nor did i say you believed that about extremists.
I was referring to the moronic group think that occurs from groups of imbeciles that believes this about all leavers attitudes and spreads that message.

When someone writes a post that includes saying people will not want to come to the UK anymore, that leavers all want to get rid of brown people, that all leavers think polish people are the cause of the last financial crisis and that leavers all think Islamic Extremists will leave the country if we gain back control of our borders i will agree with you its moronic thinking and no one sensible believes this..

And yet when you give that post a thumbs up like you did im going to tend to think you have done so on the basis you agree with whats in it and support whats being said. Im not sure how else your thumbs up should be interpreted.

i wouldnt bother snitching.
I did geography at school and i agree with Boris if you include Turkey in the EU the eastern border of the EU does indeed move to be next to Syria.
I'm sure you did geography at school but please don't patronise. You can either say that if Turkey enters the EU the south eastern border will move from Greece to Turkey, or you can say (oddly but accurately) that it will move from Turkey to Syria.

But to say, as Johnson did, that it will move from Greece to Syria is misleading propaganda designed to frighten people. I note you approve of it.

So in other words your statement before "everyone in the UK to be poorer. You must be so proud meanwhile the rest of us are having to make changes to our living standards." has as i stated, not happened yet, preempting a situation that you think might happen or would like to be happening to get your Remain view over.
Wait and see, you may well be correct in the future.

Eh? Are you saying the Markets don't believe the new UK PM (Brexit means Brexit) or think the ministry for leaving the EU has been set up with senior Brexit figures in cabinet positions to facilitate our exit for no reason.

Remainers lose referendum
Markets crash, Remaoaners say I told you so
Markets recover, Remoaners confused/disappointed
Remoaners now say wait for Article 50

There have been many sweeping generalities made on the referendum threads over the past few months but when a Remainer came out with an obviously non-literal cri de coeur yesterday instead of responding in kind you took it upon yourself to have a fit of the hissy vapours, going on and on about liars-liars-liars. It all seemed a bit phoney pompous really. And hypocritical too, in the light of your above post. (Just for the record, it is a lie to say that Turkey is 'set to join the EU' and it is a lie to suggest that an EU border is about to move two countries to the east.) It may be yesterday's issue but your reaction to Leaver lies is bang up to date.

Ooooooo pot and kettle.

I thought having regular hissy vapours was your raison d'être as was ongoing hypocrisy/double standards/phoney pomposity. For the record it was factually correct to say that Turkey was 'set to join the EU' as it is one of the accession countries which is why the EU was and is spending billions of Euro's to make it happen.

Will we have more money to spend on our International aid budget now though, post Brexit, helping education in Pakistan? There's lots of British Muslim citizens of Pakistani heritage, so I do hope so.
