The Conservative Party leadership contest [Gove to run against Boris (oh, wait)]

Where is Boris? Hardly a peep since the referendum

Are you trying to imply that he's irresponsible, and goes missing while the ship is confronted by stormy conditions and needs its crew, in order to conjure up a new ship/captain/vision/all of the above?

It's all looking remarkably good for May, who has presented the most Conservative projection: strong, proven leadership.

That's only possible if a party manifestos it and wins.

I think it's unstoppable without that.

It really isn't unstoppable. The single, only thing that confirms Brexit is the exercising of notice under Article 50 and we can only do that when we have made a decision to do so in line with our own constitutional requirements.

So a manifesto has nothing to do with it. We simply have to be sure that when the notice is exercised under the article there can be no legal challenge under a constitutional basis from either Scotland or Northern Ireland. We also have to have some sort of plan ready for negotiations on exit terms as those will commence immediately.

Those terms - and the way we handle the devolved parliaments - could vary greatly depending on which of these leaders is elected. They all seem ghastly to me anyway, it's like asking me to pick the best meal from a meat-free, gluten-free, salt-free, joy-free menu.

Interesting. I'm not sure I can be bothered to swot up on the Tory leadership election process. That said, Gove is up to something, and I'd quite like to have an educated guess (or read an educated guess from someone else) as to what it could be!

Bozza is right about the Tory election process. And I think you're right about Gove. Why on earth would he only mention one other candidate -- especially when that candidature is yet to be announced?

One thing that's interesting about the choice: for a party whose main support is in England, there are rather few English candidates. In fact, it looks likely that there won't be a single native-born Englishman standing. I bet that's never happened before

Fox and Gove, yes. But go on tell us where the rest were born.

The toffs will be fighting amongst themselves for career ambition whilst the country which is needing leadership at the moment suffers, there is only one man at the moment showing the leadership that the country needs right now and that is Jeremy Corbyn

Ernest at his funniest!

May just said " No triggering of Article 50 until the government is sure on it's negotiating position ....that will probably be at the end of the year ".... looks like Brexiteers will have to wait a little bit longer.

Another general election on the way!

I reckon Gove is only running to take out Boris. I don't think he's expecting to win, but he can scupper the buffoon.

Stephen Crabb is an interesting candidate. Born in Scotland, lived in Wales, bought up on a council estate. He has a strong belief in welfare (despite being a Tory) given his family survived on it for sometime. If Blair was Tory-lite, Crabb may well be Labour-lite.

Could have wide reaching appeal for those rejecting the elite, but unlikely the party will elect such a down to earth character.
