Great stuff! Your times are steadily falling. Hope you're starting to enjoy your runs again.

Hmmm - I've just looked back at last year, and feel less pleased!

My first run was on January 23rd 2015 and was 3.8m at 10'40"/mile. By March 22nd, my Sunday long run was up to 10 miles and on April 5th I ran my very first half-marathon distance in 2:08. I'm neither capable of those distances nor that speed now so I'm behind where I was last year where I started from nothing and a monstrous weight. I need to properly focus.

Just focus on enjoying it the times will tumble.

That's the plan. We had a great little group at Worthing Half – led by a brilliant pacer – and despite us getting nicely spread out towards the end, I think we all achieved (or overachieved) our goals for the day.

The KEY is not to go off too quickly – I'm CONVINCED – and I think a group mentality (and everyone keeping an eye on pace) will ensure this happens*. Out of four marathons completed, the most recent one was the one where I nailed this approach - only to face a big ******* hill at 24 and a bit miles. If it wasn't for that, I would have run the entire distance at a nicely controlled pace.

Contrast that with Brighton 2013 where I went off like a rocket, blew up just after the power station and limped home in just under four hours.

*Having said that, I apologise if I attempt to drop you all with a trademark sprint finish from the Pier... :)

By the time you get to the Pier I hope to be on the way to the pub.....................you are on my list of NSC runners that are to be picked off. :guns::guns:

I'm still planning on a 8:45 pace sub 3:50:00 for first half. This will leave me 2 minutes to catch up with the train in the second half before either kicking on or having to walk. I will know which on the day.

Try a week or two of running without Garmin and it is very liberating and enjoyable (although I've just ordered the 630 and will be geeking out more than ever when it arrives).

When you return to it your times will be a lot better.

I don't pay much attention to my times whilst I'm out. I just do what feels comfortable.

However I did make the mistake of setting pace alarms on my then new FR235 on one of my first runs. I thought I wasn't being too demanding on myself, based on my times from last year. As it transpired I was being massively optimistic and I had the ******* thing repeatedly buzzing me and telling me I was going too slowly for my whole run. Very demoralising! I vowed not to use that feature again until I have some sort of fitness back again. I think it will be useful to keep me going when I do.

I'm not sure I'm geeking out with it though. The only thing I have noticed, now I have an on-wrist heart rate monitor, is that nearly as soon as I start my HR shoots up to 160-170 and it stays up there until I finish!

We'll see you at the Phoenix 10k then, a Wednesday evening in July.

Bit of a long shot but does anyone have access to the Runners World online marathon training plans? I'm after their 3:15 plan which is behind their pay-wall. Used it before but it was a right ball-ache getting the access as I have to subscribe to the print version which I can't do as I can't enter a Deutsch address.

Thanks in advance.

Possibly not what you want, but you could buy it outright here, I think, for about £6: http://www.rodalestore.com/break-3-...60_color=N01&categoryid=runners-world#start=1

There's quite a comprehensive 3:15 plan here: http://www.chss.org.uk/supportus/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Training-Zone-Marathon-training-plan.pdf

Up at 5am this morning and managed a ten mile run before it got too hot. 1:28 so near marathon pace and considering it was already pretty warm and a hilly route that's OK by me. Will need to work out some kind of tapering plan when I get back at the weekend.

My heart bleeds for you. Sounds awful. I suppose you had to sit by the pool or beach later with an ice cold beer to recover. I ran in two warm tops yesterday. Lacking the heat you have I wanted to 'train' for a potential warm day on April 17. Managed to build up a great sweat but not sure if that will be beneficial or detrimental.

That's a bit pro. Most of my training has been predicated on the fact that I'm certain we'll be running in to a Force 10. If it's hot you'll pass me at Ovingdean

I was about to question a tapering plan with one week to go, then I realised you're down for London, not Brighton. Speaking of which, will you be out along the course on BM day?

You'll be amazed at how quickly you'll get back there, though. Try and concentrate on quality (hills, speedwork), not quantity – not that there is anything wrong with a long run, of course...

Very jealous. I was in a similar position to yourself last year. Ran my final long run at 4:45 Mexican time then tapered down for 10 days by relaxing by the pool, good food a few beers and a massage. I ran the race of my life when the day come and the complete relaxation and warm weather training must have helped.

I'm sure you will produce a fine run in London.

Not been on NSC for a while. Since I last posted I have done the North West London HM, 67 seconds slower than Brighton but a more challenging course with lots of hills, the ones at 9.5 and 11 miles were cruel. The last mile up Wembley way then round the stadium and finally up to run round the pitch to the finish line was fab! So now upping my training as just under 20 weeks to the Reykjavik marathon on the 20th August. wembley.jpg

Ha- not too far from the truth actually. (Not trying to make myself the most hated person on NSC here but..) jumped straight into the pool when I got back from the run, breakfast, then had an hour's sailing lesson, lunch and then a trip to a deserted island for snorkelling with turtles, back to the pool and now rehydrating with a stiff gin and tonic - is n't that the standard recovery for a ten mile run?
