Sorry, I worded that badly. I meant that most of the time when pedestrians get hit, the driver hasn't broken any laws and wouldn't get prosecuted for anything - but sometimes they panic anyway and drive off. That's not the case with this individual, who is clearly dangerously driving.

Speeding and half the car is on the wrong side of the road. Deserves a stretch inside I think.

Ah that's fair enough.
Wasn't sure if you were aware that if a driver does panic and drive off, he/she then commits a criminal offense by failing to stop and report after an accident. Even if the driver wasn't at fault for the accident.
Just for reference is all, not being pedantic!

That's just awful.

I had some guy overtake me in Rottingdean village yesterday in a Transit (must've been doing 50/60). There are plenty of people out there who just don't give a shit.

I witnessed a hit and run on the seafront in 2011. Seeing it in person is much worse. I must admit, everyone thought she was dead after but thanks to the excellent emergency services, I believe she has now made a full recovery.

The car certainly appeared to be speeding, and it was later found to be stolen. The driver, who was already banned from driving had used the car as a getaway for a burglary of a shop 15 minutes before. Complete scumbag.

Sentencing guidelines meant the judge could only give 5 years. He deserves a lot more IMO.

Fantastic work by Sussex Police to identify and arrest the driver though I must say, CCTV was very poor.

I'm sure they will be able to identify this driver, and hope the man can make a full recovery.

But normally those individuals at least stop for a moment before the panic sets in and then drive off. This cretin (does not deserve to be called person) just carries on driving like a maniac and as if he hasn't hit anything, let alone a person.

Genuine question: if you see someone driving like that - esp. in a setting like Rottingdean, always with school kids and the elderly walking around, amongst others - what action should one take? Would the police be interested if you grabbed the registration and gave Crimestoppers a call?

I don't see why not, although difficult to prove after the fact. Another option, which has been quite successful here, is taking photos on your phone and posting them on Facebook! Facebook can be pretty useful sometimes, really!

How fast was the car going? I see near misses like this once a year in Shoreham, probably more in Brighton?

Delighted that he's 'making a recovery' - how the poor fella survived that is beyond me. I don't know that area but it seems HE/SHE was also driving in the middle of the road at a stupid speed.. Some people just have no care for fellow humankind :(

PS - I'm a bit confused, the police seem to be asking were you driving certain cars that have fairly clear number plates - I'm assuming they've obviously tried tracking these down but can't from the plates... Seems odd?

I'd be suprised if they had nothing so far. I would guess maybe they want to trace the witness first before bringing someone in so they can present strong case against them from the start. I know the video looks pretty clear cut, but they might have to prove who's driving it etc, hence getting witness statements first. Just a theory.

Most of the time ? are you serious, there is a clear duty for the driver to notice pedestrians when on the pavement and to be prepared to take appropriate action if the pedestrian steps into the road. This is particularly relevant when a bus has stopped, near a school, crossings, and junctions, etc.

By failing to stop has the driver not breached the requirements of S170 of the Road Traffic Act, 1988 and is therefore guilty of an offence.

Glad Im not in your world were drivers seem to be a real life Grand Theft Auto where they can mown down pedestrians with immunity.
