My tram in Germany was very punctual at 7am local despite snowing steadily since Sunday morning. Just sayin.

There's nothing worse than a smug resident of Germany gloating about their public transport.

What about the bottle neck at Croydon and all the houses built since the line closed ?

Only the old Barcombe station and a liitle bit of Bellbrook Industrial Estate in Uckfield has been built on. The biggest issue is where you run the line from north of Lewes to join the other side of Falmer. ???

It's not the only problem though.

Firstly, things go wrong on the road too (the A23 was closed only a week ago when a driver was killed). Then there's the congestion charge cost in London: I can see that being raised again if more and more drivers start coming in to town.

There's the loss of efficiency: commuters can do work on trains (or sleep to come in fully refreshed), that's not an option for drivers. There's also the time taken: I occasionally get a coach into town and that takes just short of three hours, cars would go faster outside London, but won't have the option of bus lanes in town so it would take a similar amount of time, a lot longer than a train in other words.

Finally, there's the strain on the driver: commuting is bad for your health, I'd imagine that the effort of driving and the long delays in traffic would be even worse

You are right but I was talking about train users in general. I used to always drive to away matches. Then found petrol prices, parking etc. was to much hassle. I then switched to going by train. Now with weekend engineering works and replacement buse I may just go by car again.l

Lewes is a bottle neck junction too, of course if you had a government that invested in public infrastructure then it would be built

Sorry just seen earlier posts but it seems that even after 19 years many still can't get a grasp of the setup

I think we all understand it, but we buy our tickets from Southern (I believe) so Southern should provide me with a service, if they are being let down by their providers then they need to deal with that, not us. See it any other way and there can be no accountability and hence the mess (and it really is a mess) that we're in.

All this moaning and this petition has just achieved 574 signatures so far in about a week. I can't be as bad out there after all then. (For what it's worth I am one of the 574)

Probably just a resigned apathy. 5,000,000 signatures wouldn't make a jot of difference. Train passengers getting shafted is like taxes and death. Its a bummer, but there's nothing you can do about it.

They call it Blue Monday - I feel for you. Hope they give you a good severance package, and nothing else goes wrong today.

It is bad but I haven't signed any petition because I don't think they are taken very seriously, just a sop. And I mean that not just with this petition but all of the well-intentioned but ultimately futile petitions we get asked to sign.

I really don't know what the answer is, I'm afraid but I'm certain that signing a petition is not going to make any difference.

Exactly. Nothing will change if there is so much apathy. It's boring to hear the constant moans. Commuters STFU.

Maybe so, but signing it made me feel a little better. With all the rail travel to away games I do I have to say it's the 'Southern' bit of the journey I dread most. I had everything sorted coming home from Rotherham but plans went awry with a combination of Network Rail infrastructure problems and lack of information or any sort of contingency plan from the train operator. I was sure at one pont I was going to see a poor front-line member of staff lynched by the regular punters.

Should be okay for 6 months. Just scary as I have to start again. Same place since i left working in retail and worked my nuts off to get where i got. Tbf im angry as hell right now. But got to turn that anger into drive and proving myself again which is no bad thing. Just scary as hell. Worst part we were told jobs were safe 2 months ago and turned oppotunities down.
