A channel low with associated cold air to our north to tap into is the stuff of dreams for those who love snow! The last one we had was March 13, before that I think it was the 80's so they are very rare as the sypnotics have to match up perfectly. If it's too far north then we have rain down here, if it's too far south then we got nowt!

Anyway not even thinking about that at the moment. let's just get the cold in first and then see what happens

You mean 1987?

Is it just me but I just find those snow icons far more relevant and exciting compared the radar like weather maps we see now, used to see a snow cloud icon with 3 flakes sometimes wow !!

I seem to recall prior to these that had a habit not to stick on the map sometimes a circle claret and blue snow icon, happy days ...........................

Surely you mean absolutely zero chance of snow next week because it was the warmest December on record?

Yes predicted temps far to high. 9 c max today 2 c above normal today was described as chilly. The default now from the weathermen and women is anything other than exceptionally mild is now cold

Wow! The ECM is spectacular really. Brings in cold on Monday through Monday night. Big potential but more runs needed for any details

What does big potential mean?? For what?? Do I need to put my snow shovel back in the car? TELL ME!

What does big potential mean?? For what?? Do I need to put my snow shovel back in the car? TELL ME!

The potential is there for some very cold weather with harsh night time frosts. There will certainly be some snow if these charts verify but precise details are impossible at this stage. The wind direction and strength will be crucial for snow potential in certain locations. A straight northerly favours the north( of course) plus the bits that stick out such as Norfolk, East Kent, West Wales and Cornwall. A Northeasterly which is being shown in some runs favours the North East in particular but also the South East as very cold air becomes volatile over a long North Sea track. More widespread snowfall can also occur in these situations but the features that cause it are often only picked up at short notice.

I hope that helps

What do the figures in blue mean?

Interestingly they're not easy to translate into weather. The easier one is the 850hpa temperature.

As a rule of thumb, at this time of year, any temps at this level (which is the temp at a particular pressure level) below about -6C will bring snow.

That chart has 850hpa temps over us of about -7C. That would be cold enough, especially in an easterly airflow, as there is a less opportunity for modification by the ocean from that direction (in fact, with a proper raging easterly, straight across the straits of Dover, you can still get snow with 850hpa temps of -1 or -2C)

One measure ECMWF don't publish is the dew point temp. For snow you need dewpoints a degree or two below freezing, but that chart would probably have relatively low DPs, away from the immediate Eastern coastal strip.

All joking aside this is pure fantasy. The likelyhood is about 6 c by day ie normal and a few frosts. That is it
