I used to laugh at my mate who decades ago used to eat his 'posh' burger in Blind Lemon Alley with a knife and fork. Seems like they were ahead of the curve

HT I think you're being extremely generous about MeatLiqour - they are a london Road establishment but not exactly the 'heart' of London Road (around Preston Circus). They are as close to Trafalgar Street as they are to the main London Road drag so I think hailing their opening there as brave etc is a bit misleading!

Fair comment and I hear what you're saying but I still think it was a gamble for them in that part of town.

It isn't, but who cares? A well made burger is something that I want to eat. Sometimes.
I know you're fond of a G&T. I like a well made one of those too. Again, sometimes.

Oh yes, G&T and/or a dry Gin Martini.

My father used to take me to the Wimpy before every Albion home game in the 70s and early 80s. We always used a knife and fork. How ahead of the curve was my father eh?

Sorry I am old fashioned a burger should be in a rolland eaten outside. My brother took me to a burger bar in Los Angeles that has apparently been open 24/ 7since pre World War II

In that case, the Troll is right up your street as you can sit in the garden of the Hobgoblin to enjoy your food.

The difference with these 'posh' burgers is about the quality. For example, the Troll uses 35 day aged steak mince from the Knepp Castle estate, makes all of his own sauces and uses a local baker for his rolls - not quite the catering spare parts and gristle burger of old. If you want to make your own, then you can go to the Garlic Wood Farm butchers in Steyning and but the same mince but you'll struggle to recreate his sauces.

Nothing posh recently but just to update the thread :

The Eagle - for lunch and their £16 for two burgers is actually very decent. Personally I liked the beef burger but the chicken and bacon burger looked equally as good. 7/10

Fishy Fishy - a quick lunch but their moules were fantastic and the steak was good ( although slightly overcooked ). 7/10 again

Went to Fatto a Manno on a works night out this week - I'm not a fan of pizza for dinner ( it's a snack FFS !!!! ) but these were good. If you like pizza then you'll love this place. 9/10 ( despite not being a pizza fan )

My idea of a meal out is meat and two or three veg including Dauphanoise Potatoes well cooked with a sauce not burger of any description, as I have said probably an age thing.

You wont be disappointed. Personally I found the restaurant part rather good. Even the rabbit at the time was splendid (and Im not a rabbit fan) i suppose it helped being by the "kitchen" so the chefs gave you the plates and the explanation directly!

The food at Set is by some considerable distance the best in Brighton: well sourced, technically brilliant and, best of all, a chef who's obviously got a great palate, so the flavour combinations are extraordinary, with a long finish, with a complex array of different elements appearing in each mouthful.
It is let down, however, by a strange spatial set-up, there is a bar which seems bigger and even a table-tennis room. I think they ought to concentrate just on the restaurant, which is also too noisy, at times we struggled to hear the fourth person who was most distant on a round table. The wine is also poor: a small selection; over-priced; not terribly good examples of their kind; and not brilliant partners to the food.‎

All things considered it seems a good place. Looking forward to my visit.

Well Isaac at....having been to the set which was great Isaac knocks it into a cocked hat.

Why? Simply because there isnt a turnaround. It IS one set menu and restricted to about 40 people. Starts at 7 finishes at 10.30. Each dish is presented by the chefs themselves and the only negative is the restaurant is a bit brightly lit.

The GF is a massive massive foodie, eaten all over Brighton (seriously its ridiculous and we are talking Gingerman, Set, 64degrees level) and she has said its the best food in Brighton.

Book early for Isaac.
