The Joke That Is The Free Bus Travel Zone

Hmm, Royal Tonbridge Wells....

I have heard of Tonbridge and of Royal Tunbridge Wells, but never this place the document refers to.

Moan moan moan.

I would have thought that the travel guide provided by the club is perfectly clear, in that it stats:

There are a wide range of bus routes that serve the Amex.
On a match day, the cost of your bus travel to the stadium is included in your home league match ticket on the following services:

All Brighton and Hove buses (excluding services Lewes to Ringmer, Uckfield, and Royal Tonbridge Wells.)

Stagecoach Coastline 700 & N700 services from Worthing

If you then look at the Brighton and Hove Bus website and their very clear map which details routes that THEIR buses operate you will notice that Hurstpierpoint is not covered by a Brighton and Hove Bus route, therefore clearly the included bus travel does not apply.

As for you wanting the travel map amended so that it shows a different colour for Hurstpierpoint is just a non-starter. What next, the bus doesn't go down my road, so therefore that should be excluded as not serviced by a free bus, although I am within the area of free travel.

I just wonder who Victor Meldrew was based on.

Moan, moan, moan

I'll try again, just for you.

When I queried if I could get a bus service from Hurstpierpoint, the club sent me an email saying "Hurstpierpoint is within the free Matchday bus travel zone". At best, that's just unhelpful.

I am not moaning that I can't get a bus per se.

I am pointing out that the map showing the free bus travel zone, which is issued by the club, is misleading and that they back that up with unhelpful advice when questioned on it.

Is that clear enough? It was in my first post.

You might be surprised how far from the station you can be and still live in Hurst! I'm virtually in Albourne, so it would take too long to walk it as a matter of course. A taxi is about the same cost as the bus anyway.

I would like to use the bus because it is convenient and I would then be able to spend more money on beer at the stadium......

As I keep saying, my point is that if I didn't ask the question and just looked on the club and B&H busses websites, I could easily be under the impression that the busses were covered (which is what happened the first time I tried to use a Sussex Bus service without realising it was a service not run by B&H busses). The fact is that there is no available bus service within the area, so why show it on a map giving the impression that it is? If there were no busses at all that run through the village, it wouldn't matter, as it wouldn't be giving a false impression.

I'm just trying to understand if this is an issue across the "free" zone, or if Hurst is just unfortunate in having it's bus services run by different companies, whereas other places have the option of still using a B&H bus option.
I get your point and I think it's perfectly legitimate. Some of the responders are just looking to have an argument with you.

Simple question why dont Metro accept the vouchers from Haywards Heath as they are owned by the same company as B & H buses?

Although part of the same group, B&H and Metro bus are probably subsidiary companies and as such, will have their own contracts. I would guess that the Albion will have a contract with B&H but not Metro and therefore Metro do not provide services. As there are only a handful of routes Metro provide into Brighton - most of which run in parallel to the existing rail route - it is either not something that has been demand for, or is not worth the hassle of setting up contracts.

Why, oh why, do the club show a "free travel zone" that includes a huge area in which you cannot use any bus service?

I'm fed up with having to clarify this on a regular basis because the information on the travel guide on the club's website shows a huge area with my home location right inside it. However, none of the busses from my location are part of the transport plan agreement.

The travel guide helpfully states that there is free travel on "all Brighton and Hove Busses". The problem is that Brighton and Hove busses don't operate any busses in the area around where I live (despite the services being listed on the Brighton & Hove Busses website). However, when I send an enquiry, the first response is always "Please see the travel guide online which details that Hurstpierpoint is within the free Matchday bus travel zone". However, when pressed, the proper response becomes "Our transport manager has confirmed that unfortunately the Metro buses and Sussex Buses are NOT included in the free travel".

It's time they drew the map HONESTLY and didn't promise something that isn't delivered. Is this the case elsewhere within the free travel zone, or is Hurst unique?

"In 21st-century English, buses is the preferred plural of the noun bus. Busses appears occasionally, and dictionaries list it as a secondary spelling, but it's been out of favour for over a century. This is true in all main varieties of English."

Do you really expect the club reps to know EVERY bus route and bus stop within the free travel zone?

Also do you really expect the club to remove areas on the map where buses don't stop / route through?

The conditions that attach the map are clear enough to me, I think you are being very picky here.

Actually, the interactive map on there doesn't show much away from the coast apart from the bit up to Tunbridge Wells and up to Steyning. Does this mean that the majority of that "free bus matchday travel area" isn't served by any buses at all that can be used?

A more reasonable response from the Transport Department to Sully, would have been; " You are within the free transport zone , but unfortunately the two bus companies serving your part of the zone do not participate in the scheme".
Was there a bus waiting for the two retired teams in The Sussex Downsman Hike Sully?

It's the fifth season at the Amex surely everybody knows what they can and can't do by now.

I know I can't get a decent pie any more.

(I quite like these moaning threads. Very cathartic).

You saw the bit where I said last season Metrobus was covered and this season it isn't, then?

Yeah. The travel arrangements are still the same as the first season, aren't they? :dunce:

When i lived in Lewes, i would have to walk to the prison crossroads in order to get a bus that went to Brighton and was included in the free travel scheme however the local Lewes bus routes weren't included and as i lived about a mile from the the nearest eligible bus stop for free travel and even further from the train station i feel cheated and this area too should be removed from the free travel map for the club. I could have walked to the nearest bus stop which i could get free travel or got a taxi, but i think that's wrong and i should get free travel to that bus stop too.

There is a field near where i live now that doesn't have a bus service that runs that close by - i think this is disgusting because the map provided by the club doesn't exclude this either field from their free travel area and it's about time it was redrawn with this field excluded from the free travel area.

Waah! Waah! Waah!
