Im no fan of Saudi Arabia trust me, but again, its their laws. We know they have very harsh punishments for what we consider very minor crimes. It doesnt matter. Dont commit the very minor crimes, and you dont get any harsh punishments.
People are always saying on here, when immigrants come to UK they must obey our laws. Its the same everywhere. If you are in SA, whether you agree with their punishment scales or not. Booze making, and selling is a big crime. It gets a big punishment, which is why the rewards for getting away with it, are so high.

Utterly horrific, barbaric, backward regime still living in the 5th century. Most educated human beings evolve and develop a natural sense of decency and compassion for their fellow man, for their citizens. No nation can preach to be perfect, but the sheer scale of the brutality there, with public floggings, maimings and executions for the most minor offences truly stands out as something from another age. Repulsive.

Typical fence sitter.

But its not just the punishments they mete out that are so barbaric. Its what the authorities routinely allow and impose on its people. The oppression and subjugation of women, the marrying of girls some younger than 10, which is effectively legalised paedophilia. The murder of its own people due to their sexual preference or religious beliefs. One of the richest countries on the planet, and yet it continues to exist in this day and age as a medieval state devoid of any sense of human decency.

This. It's a f******** disgrace that in the 21st century this can still happen.

Imagine what it would be like if they drank alcohol as well.

That's the hypocrisy of it. For those with the means, weekends routinely see a huge exodus of Saudis across to Bahrain to go and get mullered. Not that I'd blame the citizens there for wanting to escape their vile country for a while.

Depressing innit. Don't rock the boat, Lockheed will throw an eppy.

In march of this year, the UK government was found in a report by the Parliamentary Committee on Arms Export Controls to have supplied £5.2bn worth of arms export licenses to countries listed as being of “human rights concern” by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, including Saudi Arabia, Libya, Syria, Ukraine and Russia.
The committee urged the government to be "significantly more cautious" in the handing out of export licenses and said:

The Government would do well to acknowledge that there is an inherent conflict between strongly promoting arms exports to authoritarian regimes whilst strongly criticising their lack of human rights at the same time.

So reading the article again, appears Uk and Saudi officials have indicated the flogging won't take place anyway (which will hopefully be the case). Regardless of the rights and wrongs of the regime, still think he was utterly daft to be brewing at home, let alone have this stuff in his car - after 25 years there he would have absolutely, 100%, known the risks he was taking and the consequences of getting caught, hence not having much sympathy for him. Doesn't mean I agree with the regime or the (possible) punishment. I was offered the chance to watch what happened in Riyadh on a Friday when I was there.....all seemed quite matter of fact to the locals but mediaeval to me. As stated in other posts the road to Bahrain is very busy with traffic on Thursday and Friday nights....

We moan that people should abide by our laws when they come here so people should do they same in other counties, even if they are barbaric ( don't move there in the first place cough cough)

i suppose if this was your relative, you'd also have no sympathy for them?

you idiotic bunch of cretins

Difficult to tell as not been in such a situation, but probably not. Distress, upset, anger and deep concern, yes but not sure about sympathy. I'd absolutely think whoever it was was very dumb.

I'm not getting involved in personal insults.

Nobody is condoning or defending what he did, which was pretty feckin' stoopid given the penalties involved.

But the nonchalant shrugging of shoulders at what the Saudi's then inflict on people as a punishment is something I do find astonishing.

I think, rightly or wrongly, stupidly or not, people get very used to life in these places and will be willing to take risks that seem inconceivable to those of us who've only read about the place online and in the papers.

Not at all the same as Saudi, but some of my wife's family live in Dubai and often go camping over the border in Oman, where I believe alcohol laws are very relaxed. They have to drive through some of the Emirates that are quite strict and where there are no alcohol licenses (i.e. it's illegal to possess in any circumstance unlike Dubai etc). As it's cheaper and easier to get in Oman, they usually bring loads back, reckoning they'll never have their boot checked at the border. Seems mental to me but I think they view it as something that's a little bit naughty, rather than something that could potentially be very serious.
