Shoreham Air show crash

The fact that we're all so close to this incident, whether geographically or mentally (friends/family/familiarity of the area), makes it quite tough to deal with.

Familiarity of the area is a surprisingly powerful tie. I've only travelled through Shoreham a couple of times since 1979 but I'm sure I wouldn't have been nearly as affected if the disaster had occurred at the Eastbourne show. I think it's because the scene of Shoreham Airport is so ingrained in my memory after countless train journeys to the GG; along with Southwick FC and Lancing College, it was one of the landmarks I always looked upon, at least when travelling east on that line. Those anticipating the worst or who are already grieving can take a crumb of comfort in that they and their loved ones are being thought about not only from exiles outside of Sussex, but around the World as well.

Not posted in this thread, but watched on with a keen eye. I'm so glad to see how everyone has grouped together and supported each other. People might not get on with each other all the time in discussions, but we're all human enough to understand tragedy and support our fellow men and women. Makes me glad to be a part of this forum.

It's a horrific thing to think about, a road that most of us have travelled down at some point in our lives and for some, earlier that day as well. Thankfully my girlfriend and I decided not to go out that day, though we were planning to travel along that way to go to Holmbush shortly after lunch.

My heartiest wishes go out to everyone that's been affected by this, whether it's directly or indirectly.

What a nice thing to do in extremely difficult circumstances by Mr Barber. ITV national news just showed a clip of Mr Barber saying a few words and there is a reporter at the training ground.

Bless all of you on NSC, I have just received wonderful news, my brother is fine. Without letting anyone know he changed his mind about the airshow and instead visited Salisbury. His home phone had broken and he forgot to take his mobile. His friend travelled to visit family in Scotland.

I am acutely aware of the power, mostly good, of NSC and it's brotherhood of wonderful people who offer such help and kindness when it's needed. I'm lucky, sadly so many are not and my heart goes out to them, I know from held back tears how you feel.

Horrible few days for everyone involved across the county, be it friends, family, friends of friends or just people with Sussex in their hearts.

Being a player for Shoreham FC, ourselves in the same league as Worthing United FC, the thought of being on the way to doing something I love on a road I have driven on a thousand times and to never get there just makes me feel.. well, shocked and numb. And for all the other victims, each going about their daily business on a beautiful day across the county.. to have it all just taken away just doesn't seem right or fair.

I cannot even begin to imagine what the families and everyone connected is going through.

Maybe it has something to do with aerial photography over the crash site? Or possibly a crane being on site?

I'm basing that on nothing but guesswork, fully happy to be corrected!

The departures would have been the aircraft here for the air show. They would have let those depart to their home airports as an exception

The crane would certainly be an issue for taking off and landing, but a no fly zone?

Nope, some of the resident planes have returned from wherever, and one of the locals has just gone for a spin as well. No big deal, just intrigued.

We are currently supporting the AAIB, Sussex Police and RAFA with ongoing investigations. Part of this includes the enforcement of a restricted area, applied by the CAA; effectively a ‘no fly zone’ for fixed wing aircraft, helicopters and drones seeking to operate within the area concerned, to allow the various agencies to continue their vital investigative work.
Please therefore note that all airspace users including fixed wing aircraft, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) such as drones and model aircraft are not permitted to fly within a two nautical mile radius of the airport and the site of the accident until further notice.
Permission to fly fixed wing aircraft, drones, model aircraft or helicopters over the site will not be granted. We appreciate your full compliance with this instruction, which also comes with the support of the joint AAIB/Sussex Police investigation teams and the local council.

The constant sound of the jets going to Gatwick was and is pissing me off. Within two miles at ground level measurements.

I expect these don't count and they are trying to stop drones. A biplane was over the site yesterday afternoon.
