These pre-season friendlies are a fantastic indicator of how well a team will do and it's totally justified that people are losing their minds over this result.

Don't believe me? Take a look at the below. These are Watford's pre-season results from last year.

Watford are currently sitting SECOND TO BOTTOM in the Premie.... oh.

It's not about the results though is it? It's about the glaring lack of any kind of quality up front, three of them could barely muster 5 goals between them in the league last season and the other is completely unproven, we have one winger who is young and was injured a lot last season and one who is completely inconsistent. It is difficult to see where the goals are coming from and we now have less than two weeks before our first game of the season against forest. It would be nice to feel like we stand a reasonable chance of going into that game and getting a win but at the moment it feels like a horrible horrible extension of last season.

We were WARNED about Hughton, he should have been SACKED at the end of last season. He is no IMPROVEMENT on SEMMI and the STATS never LIE.

The fact is, unless we sign a proven forward and two decent creative players, this team doesn't have enough in it other than to be also run mid table dross at best. It just doesn't have the goals in it. This is compounded by the fact we have one of the dullest managers currently plying his trade in the football league.

I have a feeling the striking department is done as far as transfers are concerned.

We have 4 in COG, Hemed, Colunga and Baldock as well as the Finn and Harper hoping to be integrated into the first team squad in a couple of months. Thats 6.

Unless Colunga and COG are shipped out I cant see the club investing in any more strikers.

I wouldn't be at all unhappy with Baldock and Hemed as our first choice front 2. Both have a decent scoring record, and neither played any part in our goal drought at the end of last season; in fact that goaless run coincided with Baldock getting injured.

Hemed's obviously new. Baldock I'm quite happy with. Under CH he looked pretty dangerous until he got injured and all he seems to need is a run of games and to play off a stronger parter. Colunga I just can't see being arsed and COG is terrible. If we're going to score the requisite number of goals then one or both has to ship out.

I actually agree with you. But the emphasis put on pre-season results makes me laugh. It's the same every year and almost never has any real bearing on how the season will pan out.

The real issue here is not the match, the amount of goals we scored or even how we played. It's the fact that I think most of us are a little tired of the apparent gambles by the club. We could be sitting here in a few months with Baldock and O'Grady both finding form and scoring goals. Hemed could turn out to be a corker of a signing and the Finn might be breaking into the first team along with Harper....But the likelihood of all (if any) of those things happening isn't nearly as high as many would like.

In an ideal world, I'd like to see a one more striker come in. A good one. A really really bloody good one.

One further proven, not a youngster with promise, forward is an absolute must. Also where are the goals going to be created from? We don't have many passing midfielders or players with a bit of guile who can make things happen. Keyal is about the about only one after losing Tex and our both wingers are unreliable and very injury prone. The club have already said the recruitment its going to spill over beyond the start of the season but I'm beginning to worry.
I'm expecting a "slow" start to the campaign.

We very much need a 20 goal a season striker who has done it at this level, and then the others will probably chip in too. We have good prospects for a year or two down the line, but I don't think we yet have a strike force that will over come the issues that we had last year - lots of chances very few goals.

Unfortunately, the going price for a striker that has scored 20+ in a championship season is about £12m!

Middlesboro with no parachute money, lower gates than us are prepared to go £14million for Rhodes, if they can do this why are we messing around with the likes of Hemed and the other cheap options signed ?
