Doesn't live in my road. ???
Did some work for a Palace fan in Newhaven, not the type to be a face and definitely would not be out with a woman.

I'm expecting to be there, I've got a rare tues night off so it ties in

Hopefully see you there. Lost 4-0 to a very impressive Crawley side last night in front of 863. Izale McCleod scored 2 and would have had a hat trick but for a fantastic save from our very young sub keeper. Big rumour that he's off to Barnsley on £5.5k per week but, if Crawley do hang on to him, they will be a decent bet to go back up.

Sad to say that Gerry Ryan, who featured in some of those games against Palace in that era, has had a stroke and is now living with his mum in Dublin, having lost everything.

How did he end up having lost everything ? Is it another sad story of a successful sportsman having got poor financial advice.

Players were not on big money in those days. The season we were relegated from the top division Steve Foster and Mike Robinson were the highest paid players in the country on £1,400 a week.

Ryan would have been on far less than that. He was divorced and his wife took him to the cleaners I heard too.

Steve Foster & Mike Robinson on higher salaries than Liverpool Players. Maybe the club were throwing a lot of money around.

Back to Gerry Ryan, I thought there was a post on here about him living at his Mother's, with his wife.

I'll do some ferreting around about his domestic situation.

We were certainly big payers in those days. I was talking to Mickey Thomas about why he signed for us from Everton and by all accounts we offered him a lot more dosh.

Paying out those sort of salaries back in those days, with gates generally under 20K the club probably were living well beyond it's means. With admission prices being a couple of quid.

Absolutely. It set up the club for the financial struggles a few years later when we were having our transfer policy dictated by Barclays, such as selling Dean Saunders for £60,000, and he went to Liverpool

Lawro was on 5 Live recently talking about his move to Liverpool and said he didn't earn more than he got at the Albion. And Arsenal tried to sign him and offered him less!

I think Bamber was the cause, and of course he died tragically just when Albion needed more finance.

In the book written when you got promoted to Div 1 he said that the club needed a new stadium, but of course once you were relegated that just wasn't possible financially.

Yup, we were also being bankrolled by Keith Wickenden, who was quite wealthy, but he was killed in a helicopter accident (I think). Bamber talked the talk in relation to finance, but suspect he was in hock to the banks to quite a degree.

From then on it was a slippery slope.

I believe she said he would do nothing for 89 minutes and then pop up in the box unexpectedly to deliver a great finish.
