I think you are being a bit loose with some of the facts here.

For example, we scored 85 league goals in 2010/11, our highest number since 1964/5, and drew 7 league matches out of 46
In 2012/13 we scored 69 league goals in the Championship, only four teams scored more than that, and had the joint lowest number of defeats.
Poyet gave Dunk and JFC a chance in the team, and spotted, probably earlier than a lot of others, that the latter wasn't up to the task. I don't recall Garcia, Hyppia or Hughton playing loads of kids in the team either, so not sure what people want from a manager. If they're not good enough, don't play them.

Agree entirely

I take your point although I think it is fair to say Gus's tactics in his final season with us and throughout at Sunderland have been conservative. In 2012/13 we had 18 draws, in 2014/15 Sunderland have had 14 so the most in both divisions. Our record after going a goal behind under Gus was shocking, it was something quickly rectified by Oscar. Yes, JFC got his chance but it was one or two games and he was gone. Dunk was the one he did give a decent amount of gametime to but only in 2011/12, not in 2012/13 - Sunderland have had no kids brought through since Jordan Henderson and Jack Colback - neither now with the club.

Garcia started Ince in the first home match of 2013/14 vs Derby - he played in 33 games, Solly March looked like a £4million man under Oscar and played in 27 matches, JFC played in 34 matches.

Compare that to Gus giving JFC, Elphick and Hall 9 games between them in 2011/12. The latter two, along with Cook, left and in 2012/13 Dunk only got 9 games and JFC 3 games. None of the other kids got a look in.

Those individuals don't have an ego?

Tell you what, try selecting 11 players from a squad to perform in front of 60,000 people, or even 20,000 at the Amex, whilst having every decision scrutinized by at least that many "experts" passing comment on what you do WITHOUT an ego: racked by self-doubt, with absolutely no courage of your own convictions. See how far you'd get. It's a ridiculous thing to claim: of course those people have an ego and a bloody big one too.

Of course Hughton has a gentler, politer, gentlemanly style about him - something I actually really like about him, for what little it's worth - but, honestly, no-one with a career like his doesn't have an ego, just in order to do what he does for a living. IMHO.

It's about believing in themselves and enjoying what they do, and some are more humble than others.

I have no love for the man after the speech he gave after the play off defeat. We were demoralised and needed picking up and he came on talking bollox about ceilings and intimating this and that.
Compare it to Mullerys speech after Saints and Spurs had cheated us in 78.
He said we'd be back even stronger and next time we'd do it.

I appreciate people throw the statistic about not coming from behind under Gus, but we didn't go behind very often in the first place.

Dunk didn't play much because both Upson, Greer and El Abd kept him out of the team. He also had a court case hanging over him.

Think it's a bit unfair to say Ince was a kid brought through by Garcia, as if so, the same could be said about Barnes and Bridcutt, both young players discovered by Poyet who have gone on to the Premier League.

Gus has some very good points and some very bad ones too, some of the latter haven't made it onto NSC though.........yet!

If that were to happen, one thing Matthew Benham and Gus would agree on - Neither would be sending Christmas Christmas cards to TB I suspect. I think its safe to say there would be a mutual dislike of our Tony.

Maybe employing Gus would be a combined way of both pointing a huge middle finger towards The Amex?

As long as Gus is happy to have his signings picked by a computer and a load of statisticians. I am sure he will be amenable to that.....

Did you want him to lie? He knew there wasn't going to be a next time as he was leaving.

I'm still trying - and failing - to think of a successful football manager without a sizable ego.

Nope, no-one. Not one. Because it's literally impossible to do that job without one, that's why.

Honestly, some of the sour grapes written above about Guys just seems embittered, IMHO.

Arsene Wenger, that was easy, next.

Wenger has an ENORMOUS ego, he has ingored all the criticism and comments about failure to recruit players for years, convinced that he is right and everyone else is wrong.

Having complete faith in your own ability has to mean a big ego? Can't agree.

Personally I've always found Russell Slade's ego unbearable, closely followed by Kenny Jackett and Nigel Clough, another pair of wannabe world leaders.

Well then he made up excuses about budgets and ceilings to keep things smooth before he resigned. Is that it ? Oh he was suspended though wasnt he before getting the elbow for failing to complete tasks allocated to him as the manager of Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club....... Sorry you're confusing me.

Superb post. Particularly the bit in bold. It is BAFFLING the attitudes of so many to one of our best ever managers.

How will I cope? I had the audacity to disagree and I get a thumbs down. Bless!

From the Guardian:

Poyet, despite his frequent moans about a lack of autonomy, had a big say in transfers, sabotaging Congerton’s summer attempts to sign Micah Richards and Toby Alderweireld while being permitted to recruit the ineffective Will Buckley, Sebastián Coates, Ricardo Álvarez and Santiago Vergini.

http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2015/mar/16/gus-poyet-sunderland-sack

I read somewhere else that he phoned up their agents and said he didn't want them, that is why sabotage has been used to describe the events because the deals were as good as done.
