I've read Charlie Hebdo many times. It is a no holds barred left wing political satire magazine - in some ways a paper version of me. It's just been murderously attacked by Islamist fascists who object to their religion being satirised. It seems we are all targets now. SOLIDARITY WITH CHARLIE HEBDO!

Attila beat him to pseuds corner back on the first page.

I live in an area of London with a significant Muslim population mainly of Cypriot and Turkish descent. I have no doubts that 99.9% of them are appalled by happened in Paris.

Does where there descend from maybe offer a different strain of Islam ?

Especially Cypriot Turks, and many mainland Turks, are essentially secular.

They are from a secular culture which does have some significance. The main strains of Islam are Sunni and Shia and you can find both decent and repellent people in both traditions.

Is it time, for all decent Muslim folk to stand up together and make a big deal of all this shit? Their religion is causing innocent Muslims agro so if they really are the majority, is it time to stand shoulder to shoulder against the radicals?

Repellent, in what way, do you mean in the context of extremism ?

I don't know whether to feel flattered or insulted.

But I stand by the comment, and don't think Private Eye would use it.

But I may be wrong.

Ps - but it doesn't lessen the horror of what has happened in Paris.

Yes - One could equally point out that Martin Luther King and Ian Paisley were both Protestant Dissenters without believing they had much else in common.

Fine with me, if you think so -you live there and can measure the atmosphere. Might it just be rather different, as they are originally from Europe - OK, arguable about parts of Turkey? Not disbelieving you at all -just wondering.

Steady on, I suspect Atilla will be able to point to his many poems and vignettes that mercilessly mock the prophet Mohommed and Islam like Charlie Hebdo.

I'm sure his next performance will involve a suitable tribute which would include a cutting satirical piss take on the ridiculousness of Islam and its followers.

Brighton / Hove actually
Controversial as it sounds, but for all we know they could all be alive and starting new lives with different identities around the world.

I am surprised how these armed gunmen had time to mistakenly raid the wrong shop before correctly going to Charlie Hebdo, then having to get one of the girls there to punch in a security code to where the executive team were having a meeting, then carry out an attack, make an escape, flee by car and shoot a Muslim policeman in the process

I presume an alarm would have been raised after they initially entered the wrong shop, and if so, why did it take 5 mins for just one police car to turn up on the scene, and by the looks of it no other emergency services were anywhere near the vicinity.

Of course we can put the emergency services delay down to incompetence, or it could have been staged, with no deaths, but with the intention to provoke a massive reaction.

I am no way claiming that this is true, but I can see a motive to do this, and especially if they were in fear of their lives anyway, why not stage it before it happens?
