2. I pointed out that she has no power to remove him from his position.

I think this post, and bushy's spluttering outrage both miss the point I was trying to make. Which is that it doesn't matter what any of us 3 think about a school's policy for learning Polish (for arguments sake), it's for the people who elect the governors to decide. And a governor who switches to declare himself as a UKIP member after being elected is fundamentally changing the goalposts.

As for the specific example of learning Polish, well of course kids of Polish parents could learn Polish in a more immersive environment. Equally, kids of football-mad parents could learn football in a more immersive environment too, but that doesn't mean to say they'd be happy to see football struck off the PE curriculum.

Do we know he was an elected Governor and not a school nor LEA appointed governor - if either of these then his political affiliations are relevant.

You missed off that someone has a track record of mention a political leader who hasn't been a leader for years and someone who bottles get togethers.

Absolutely this on both counts. Having been a governor and chair of governors in the past of a local junior school, the man in question should certainly not have felt forced to resign. What a wimp.

Besides which, you're completely wrong. For arguments sake, membership of UKIP might suggest that a governor be strongly opposed to the introduction of teaching basic Polish in schools. This would be an issue in an area with a lot of ethnic Poles, I'm sure you'd agree.

I see what you mean but it is very far-fetched - I could not see how there could be a conflict between the school's ethos and a mainstream political party in a democracy, whatever the rights and wrongs of UKIP. I do appreciate that this is for argument's sake, however.

When I was an LEA appointed governor, no-one asked me what my political affiliations were. Nor my religious affiliations (which might have been relevant, given that the school in question was a Church of England Controlled School).

I am sorry but I cannot see that changing your political allegiances has anything to with being a governor. Fellow parents might vote you in as a parent governor, or you might represent the community. You would have been voted in on the basis of your willingness to do this and that, or due to your ability in, say, financial matters - what you can bring to the school is the crucial issue. As a clerk to governors in three local schools, I have yet to hear anyone talk of allegiance to any party.
