I probably lived in Newhaven for longer than you so I know what it's like. How was I negative when I sung the praises of 3 other places? Newhaven has the worst High Street in Sussex, no banks and only one cash machine. The centre used to be vibrant but now there isn't one single decent shop. Peacehaven also has no heart, just a concrete monolith. If people just use their house to sleep in but work and play elsewhere then I guess it's ok for you but they wouldn't have put an incinerator and a sewage plant there if they were beautiful places.

For that prove range you can get a nice three bed in Peacehaven. Bus lane to town takes minutes. Plus you have Newhaven pool not far either.

I grew up in Portslade too and couldn't wait to get out. Having to move back here seven years ago was a bit annoying, I just thought of it as chavvy and grim. We chose it because it was (just) in the City of Brighton and Hove, had mainline links to London all day and at weekends (I work in London) and had quick access to good shops (though Boundary Road is still unbearably grim you have a choice of Supermarkets and Richardson and Church Roads are an easy drive, bus ride or cycle). The thing is around that time a lot of other people had the same idea. It has improved not only the property but also the schools and parks no end and the area finally got a decent pub when The Stanley went Real Ale. It isn't just Victoria Road that is improving - in fact I don't think that's changed at all - but the area around Franklin Road, St Andrews Road and Norway Street as well as the smaller terraces near The Stanley. Unfortunately this has meant that you will get nothing here for your new budget. Nothing decent at all. Maybe a flat with no garden. This is completely insane.
Just now for shits and giggles I put what I think my current budget would be in to a property search for Newhaven. I had to look twice as it was actually hard to get to my budget and all the houses available within it are bigger than I have here in the Slarde. If they're planning on doing up the shops and road links then you'd also be buying there at just the right time.

My mum moved from Coldean to Newhaven 10 years ago, the town was due to undergo lots of regeneration work. I'm not sure what happened but in that time Newhaven seems to have gone backwards, the value of her house has barely increased despite having a brand new kitchen, bathroom, garden, glazing and all other rooms decorated. In the meantime we bought a flat in Southwick for £145k which less than 3 years later is valued at £180k

I'm with you. Newhaven is a shadow of it's former self. What gets me is the plan for 800 new homes. Yes we need new homes but please provide some jobs, sort out the roads and improve the existing services otherwise Newhaven is not being able to cope.
Please correct me, wasn't there a plan to completely renovate Newhaven station, build a new Tescos, which could have possibly gone on to further improvements at the port and a reason for the ferry to stay at the port.
The council decided to go with ASDA plan instead where the old Parkers was, so they knocked back the development of the station and then ASDA pulled out as well.
Once again Newhaven is left with nothing. We need jobs first before anything and redevelopment before we can think about more housing.

The Tesco plan was rejected and thankfully so, seeing as they have 'new' stores boarded up which were due to open in November, following their shocking figures this week.
The road into the ferry is going to to be done this autumn as I have already posted.
The new cash machine was fitted yesterday.
The Coffee House is an ideal place to waste 20 minutes with delicious cakes, paninis etc and great coffee, next door to Dees, which is a great newsagents.
The best thing about Newhaven? People still smile and say Good Morning.

Moved to Shoreham Beach two years ago from Brighton. Absolutely love it. Dog loves the beach. Nice town with most things you need. Easy to get everywhere. But prices beginning to go nuts. I'd look at Lancing.

Is this the road that is going to join at the Seaford bends or is it going to run alongside Halfords and come out there?
The port is Newhavens biggest asset. Let's hope they redevelop this before they think about any more housing.

There are no 'vast' estates in Seaford. The majority of the town, especially away from the centre is very high quality housing.

We did look at places in lancing too but much preferred Newhaven. It's a lot easier to get into Brighton, it seems a lot friendlier and it's still much cheaper for some reason.

I'm looking to move out of Sompting. I agree that Lancing is not very friendly, in fact it is the most unfriendliest place that iv'e lived in. If you don't come from Lancing originally, then it is even worse. The pubs are not very good and the high street is dying. My son moved in with me about 9 years ago, i never changed his school and all his mates are over Goring/Durrington.
Definite signs of improvement on the pub front. There is a micro pub opening October 8th, which is an off shoot of the Stanley Arms and both the Crabtree and the New Sussex Hotel are decent. Plus Gardiner and Scardifield are the antidote to soulless DIY warehouses.

I don't think anyone is saying Newhaven or Peacehaven is a beautiful place, but you can't argue that the surrounding country side is very nice.
You are correct about the banks and shops, but I bank in Peacehaven and sometimes Seaford, as for shops we have supermarkets, off licences and chip shops, what other shops does a bloke want?
