What was Andy Murray thinking of, only had to keep his gob shut for another 2 days and he could have avoided another 5 years of abuse. Then be backed the wrong side. Silly boy.

And back to the original question, yes he should go.

He had perfect timing for this referendum, an unpopular Tory Government, the'Question' loaded in his favour, 16/17 year olds allowed to vote.

While I'm glad it's a 'no' vote, he does have a point. The demographics are pretty clear: the older Scottish voters said no to independence, but the younger ones overwhelming voted yes.

Where is the official breakdown of votes please?

Well, a close run thing as Wellington would have said. Nothing will be the same again that's for sure and 45% wanted independence.

What is already amusing me is listening now, an hour or so after the poll verdict and the Yes campaign are blaming the BBC, the size of No banners, fear campaigning (pot and kettle!) on behalf of the No-lobby....and carping on, in typical big chip Scottish Nationalist style, effectively about how glorious a defeat they had as if they won! And next time (whenever that is) they'll win. Same as when we play them at football. It's a superb national trait: rewriting the actual result.

I've no doubt the UK will split up in time. Perhaps not in our life times. It will now be interesting to see if England gets a similar vote and boot the Rest of the UK out first. This has upset a lot of people south of the border. Another nationalist how saying we've killed the dream for the entire UK, the dream of a sustainable welfare state, the end of the horrific immigration system, nuclear weapons removed from Scottish soil, a certain class of people have won (I guess she meant the 'majority' class!)....blah bitter blah bitter blah. Honestly, if they didn't keep saying Salmond has lost then you'd think it was the other way round already.

My opinion? For what it's worth? No one wants to live next door to a grumpy neighbour who whinges all the time so until and if "we" move....let's hope "they" do. Might get my Kitchener poster out ie the one with "England says...GO!" ;)

I also have no evidence of this, but my common sense leads me to agree that the younger voters were more likely to vote for change.

not sure you can use common sense and relate it to Scotland in the same breath.

still would be nice to see these figures of how people voted.....and frankly how they managed to come up with them within a couple of hours

He has admitted defeat, but was less than gracious, saying that the Scots had just not voted for independence yet. He was very demanding in declaring that next 'Scotland Bill' be delivered on time and without delay. He banged on about 1.6 million votes for the yes vote, whilst giving no mention of the no vote. The only positive comment he gave was that he respected the democratic choice of the electorate and encouraged his supporters to do the same.

Is this the end of the road for the Salmond/Sturgeon show?

Well, by the same argument as all those demanding Cameron's resignation if the vote had been yes, then he should go.

Listening to some of the 16 year olds reasons for voting yes clearly shows why 16 year olds shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Brilliant! I will use this today to bait any over enthused Yes Scots. Thank you!

Ah! the simple passions of youth. I would like to see how the 16-18 ‘yay’ voters with their youthful anger and probable basic grasp of the facts of life feel in 10 years. You know; when the majority are sitting on a mortgage, two kids and have a vested interest in maintaining a ‘state of quo.’ Time as ever will tell...

It’s strange how so many youth dream of changing the world, taking risks… viva the revolution… give it a few years and you’re in the institution. It’s hippiedom played out for the pleasure of time in memoriam, cut yer hair, get a job…

“They came from miles around, to play upon pipes of peace, but the ‘man’ he won the race, dreams asunder laid in waste… ”

He's probably right. He managed to convince 45% of Scots to jump into the abyss. That takes some political skill.

I think it also shows how lacking our other politicians are.

Let's not forget that he's up against a piggy-eyed Bullingdon bully, a man who isn't even the most electable politician for his party in his own family, an unprincipled gimp who looks like a VI former, and now a deluded gobby quasi-racist tosspot whose city-boy wealth precludes him from having to face reality.

So on balance, I make Brian Cox correct.

Given that all the political parties have already made promises to Scotland to have more powers in an event of a NO vote his party were in a win win situation. Salmond may be seen as a liability by his own party but the politics he represents will no doubt survive. It will be interesting to see how SNP do against Labour in the next General Election as I think Darling performed very poorly in the recent debates.

I had a chat last night with my 16 year old daughter. She has no idea of monetary markets work; no idea what taxes are spent on; and no idea on how parliament works.

She's passionate about dance, drama and seeing her friends. She has just finished being a child and is not yet an adult. She's charming, courteous and freely admits she has loads to learn.

I would never trust her to vote sensibly on an issue like this or a general election. She wouldn't trust herself.

The very idea of 16 year olds voting fills me with horror. Get yourself into the world of work (or unemployment) post 18 and we'll talk.

Did they distinguish the votes by age then? I thought it was a 2 question vote, or were there separate polling booths for younger voters?

I remember speaking to a young lad who was voting for the first time in 1997. He said he was voting Liberal cause he liked the sound of it, and a Liberal victory would mean it would be more likely he could legally smoke pot. :lolol:
