Too many pages to go back over so; by the sound of things you ride a lot? I'm trying to knock out a 100 miles a week to start to lose me beer belly! Are there a group of nsc cycle geeks that ride together at all?

Brighton Excelsior do club rides from the Red Lion pub in Shoreham at 09.00 on a Sunday morning - typically a 40 or 50 mile run out back by midday, and a social ride on a Thursday night through the summer 6.30pm till 8.30pm or so. Sounds a bit intimidating perhaps, but it's just a friendly bunch of cyclists, often with an age range of 14 to 70.

I've ridden with Pogue Mahone, Hamilton, @judge, and Spreadbetting Seagull, although unfortunately it's not that regular but we do meet up if we can. Pogue Mahone for example will say he's going on a leisurely 35 mile Saturday morning spin and turn it into 70 miles with some vicious climbs!

I ain't riding with them, splitters

We don't really ride en mass, obvious as a 'club' were a pretty disparate group, being Albion fans who cycle.

Check out our Strava page (my signature) from that you'll get a good idea as to who goes where, when and how quickly, then just take it from there.

Being from Southwick you might want to take a look at all the Coombes sections.
Some of us 'play' there as it seems to be on a fair few of our standard routes.

Nice one, cheers. I've been using map my ride but a mate has mentioned strata. Been going along the coast but head wind can be a fickin nightmare. Thinking about heading inland!

I'm so glad I ran away from that one (not a biathalon reference).
All being well I'm edging nearer the shape where I could cope with such a ride, I certainly couldn't then.

I always say it, as cyclist we are truly blessed by Sussex.
You could ride to Havant and back climbing all of 10 feet.
You could toil away up Steyning/Ditchling or one of countless other climbs.
Or you can undulate for mile upon mile.

Again looking at other peoples routes on strava is likely to highlight brilliant roads you never knew existed from behind the wheel.

I can only really comment on the run part, but my parkrun PB is 20:57 and my fastest 5k in a sprint triathlon (750m swim and 20k ride) is 23:19.

Can't really compare the bike as the triathlon courses tend to be flatter and faster than a longer ride.

Edit - sorry IL, this was meant to be in reply to your last question!

OK, that's sort of what I thought. I have a 5k of 16.50 so thought around 20 minutes would be good.

Pogue Mahone has another trick. For the first 10 miles he makes out as if his legs aren't in it or there is something wrong with his bike. This makes you feel for him and feel you can set the pace. Beware. The man has an engine on him the size of Belgium. In fact he is as canny and tough as any rider you'll find in Flanders.

Fancy a ride two weeks from this Saturday? Or is football training back in full swing?

Yes, the 6th of August. Perhaps a few of the Strava group could stretch our legs.
Sept.

Hmmm that's possible for me, or I could continue to stuff my face with cake, while watching Ray Donovan.

What's the oddest thing you've ever picked up or could have picked up on a ride?

For me, on an a-road last sunday, I nearly rode over an effing great carving knife. Pondered picking it up for a chuckle but nowhere to store it.

Of course, any geeks that are holidaying down the new forest way can join me for a ride!

Don't let the recent press about the locals put you off!

OK, that's sort of what I thought. I have a 5k of 16.50 so thought around 20 minutes would be good.

The differences between your stand alone times and splits in the triathlon will vary massively person to person, but typically the fitter you are then the less difference (in % terms) you should find. It's a bit like comparing your 5km and 10km times, more elite athletes have a much smaller drop in pace than us amateurs.

At the more elite levels triathletes develop cycling and running styles which utilize different muscles, meaning your run should be less affected by the bike leg.

I would think you should definitely be looking for sub 20 minutes on your run, and you should finish high up the rankings in any sprint tri!

It's quite difficult to compare triathlon splits since no 2 events are the same, it's very rare that they're accurately measured. I did an Olympic recently that was billed as 9km run rather than the standard 10km, it actually came in at 8.5km, but then again the bike was about 3km long.

Thanks for the advice BA. If I get into this then I'll start a triathlon geeks thread!

Ray Donovan - talk me through that. I meant to watch it. Have I missed it?

Celeste - a song by Donovan, if I'm not mistaken. The symmetry is incredible.
