I work for minimum wage. It has raised time and time again, but my (and everyone else's) tax-free allowance has risen, plus, my tax credit have increase. Do I earn enough for what I'm worth? No.

Mustafa is talking bollox when he says the regular worker is worse off. Wages (for the lowest payed) have risen, job security is as stable as ever (as long as you're prepared to graft and are lucky enough to be in a well run company).
Exactly. I'd like the average and lower paid families to have a decent standard of living - if at the same time, some stupidly rich people get richer, I really don't care.

You always make this point, but you have no clue what the service sector comprises.

??? I'm certain most people know what the service sectors comprises. It isn't a secret. And I will continue to make this point, just like most economic commentators and even George Osborne does, until it changes.

I've seen you sneaking out the back of the HONEY CLUB, so you definitely know what the service sector comprises :bigwave:

i see virtually no economic commentators making this point, unless they are on the left and think that some how manufacturuing is a panecea to everything. again, what proportion of the economy should service sector be to be "balanced"?

Now there is no deficit? Which universe do you get your newspaper from?

Some believe there is no deficit because they think they'll be able to wallow in their own self importance when the next lot take over.

It really doesn't matter which political party is in charge, it will be the same whatever happens.

How did you get from my comment about needing a more balanced economy to "manufacturing being the panacea for everything"?

Maybe you need to read more? There is a lot of call for rebalancing; even Osborne has said this.

What i would add here, that any chancellor has to follow the mode of the Lib/dems (although i am not a particular follower of them) raise the level of when you start to pay tax and seriously aim for £15K in the next parliament don't claw it back in sleath tax just twink the higher rate a bit.

Agree that the increase in the personal allowance has been a good thing and that it should continue to be raised.

Disagree that the tweaking of the higher rate band has been the correct way to pay for it.

More and more the people getting royally screwed by the tax system are those earning a decent living but not a massive amount.

Rather than dragging more people into paying 40% tax I would prefer to see those who can actually easily afford it pay a little more. Say a 50% band for those earning £200k+ or something similar. Oh hang on....

The disappointing thing is that those earning the most will still often pay nothing (or very minimal amounts) by using offshore companies, non resident status etc while the middle earners (those on PAYE anyway) get totally shafted.

I'm much better off than I was ten years ago, ridiculously so. But I'm self employed so fortunately I've not had to rely on someone else deciding how much I earn. I realise I've been really lucky.

Llcoolj, trying to go with you here,if you earn £2/3K aweek then ''twink'' needs to be looked at,simply from the maths point of veiw if you are able to give 'Joe Public' £ to spend he/she will do it

Yeah but the 40% rate kicks in when you're earning less than £1k a week, which was my point.

no, theres some of pandering to this view, usualy from angle that more of anything is good, without any insight to what "balance" should be. which i note you evade again. obviously growth in non-service sector is good, as any growth, why is it a means in itself?

Osborne doesnt care where growth comes form as long as it comes, he's made no concreate policy other than on construction to create growth and just left it to the economic cycle.
