What harm does a cat do by going into a garden? This discussion is about stopping them going into a garden so if someone doesn't want any to into there, regardless of whether they left anything behind or not so why should the owner have to pay to stop them?

Cats should not be allowed to wander where they like. It's not their given right to be able to wander onto others properties. The only people who seem to think their cat has some right to go into other peoples yards is cat owners.

What harm can they do?

Well if you let your cat out and 5 houses down the road the people have pet birds regardless if they are caged the cat can kill them.

5 houses the other way the family has a sand pit for their kids. a Young child can be playing in that pit and they can dig up this vile cat shit.

Someone could have a bird feeder out for native birds to come feed from. Cat ends up stalking and killing birds trying to feed.

Should the owners charge their neighbours for the pest control that cats may provide (mice, rats, etc)

No, why would they?

Cat owners don't pay for animals their cats kills.

Most cats do not leave their poop on the surface, they tend to bury it,for they wish not to give away their position to others or predators, further, they dislike the smell.....

They aren't the only ones. Cats poo is revolting and there is nothing worse than tilling a vegetable plot and unearthing these gifts from Satan. The poo will have a detrimental effect on plants in the vicinity and you've got no chance with seedlings.
My remedy...a metal tray dropped onto a hard surface. Its hilarious. The cats rise vertically, with their hair on end and are trying to run away in mid-air.
My fall-back is a high-powered hose. No better sight than a dripping wet cat tearing out of your garden.

The fact is - and as an animal lover and especially of the cat,i can appreciate that what is good in Euroupe or even in England may not be the same elsewhere..

It's not good anywhere. It's happening in England right now.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-19353/Cats-kill-275-million-animals-year.html

"This survey has given a clear indication of the threats cats pose to Britain's animal populations," he said.
Mr Woods, who is also the society's vice-chairman, added: "Although it is unlikely that cats alone will cause any species to become endangered in Britain, for those which are already under pressure for other reasons, such as thrushes, harvest mice, grass snakes and slow-worms, cats could tip them over the edge.

probably because cats don't maul sheep
Ah the old cats killing songbirds theory, nothing to do with farmers ploughing in the hedgerows, and using chemicals then

Well they certainly take out other birds. Two blue tits and a wren this year. Add this to the three tits last year ....
At a minimum cats should where bells as it would at least keep the number of bird kills down.
roar doesn't work however a hose pipe does.

Why are you allowed to impose your pets on others?

probably because that what is what the law allows
people might say the same about allowing dogs out without owners being there
I did not want to bring this up .....but when was the last time a cat mauled a child to death

And humans have the right to decide where animals can and can't go? - how do you know they don't think that the neighbours are the ones trespassing on their territory

Just wondering how the neighbours would react if I knocked on their door walked in and took a shit in the cat litter tray.

:)

Try one or more of these - make sure you click on the Amazon tab at the top on NSC:-

Have a couple of these, one in the front of the house to discourage "deposits" on the gravel strip at the front of the house; t'tother is at the rear, primarily to discourage foxes doing very noisy fox thinks on our decking in the wee small hours.

I would rate them as 99% effective, we have one for two years and it has survived in all weathers plus as it has a solar panel you don't need to check the batteries.

OK, let me alter the question.

Morally, why should I have to clear up animal facaes in MY garden because of a cat lovers hobby/obsession?

Rightly or wrongly, whether you like it or not, we are top of the evolutionary tree at the present time. So yes, we do have the right to decide where animals can and can't go, and I would suggest it is in Rover's and Ginger's best interest to remember that.

I would be quite happy never to see another cat for the rest of my life. Ghastly creatures.

You what?

Love cats but every single one of them should have a bell attached to protect birdlife. If you actually saw what little tiddles gets up to out of your sight then you'd realise they can be evil little f@@kers. I would still love one again but live in a first floor flat.

thats as you see it
the cat see's it another way (and so do the good old RSPCA)
as do some dogs, difference is they become aggressive and maim and sometimes kill
ask an RSPCA officer how many cats they have to take away and PTS as apposed to how many cats they have to take away for the same reason, in my experience when a cat gets the needle it goes off and finds a new home
