What is "unprecedented"? A party coming from nowhere and winning 28 per cent of the vote? I seem to remember the Seagulls Party achieving that.

He he. Good point well made!

I stand corrected.

(As I recall the Seagulls Party also featured a chap who liked a pint and a fag. The lesson here? Be yourself, say what you stand for and let the electorate speak).

I did have the benefit of meeting Nigel Farage during the campaign, though. He gave me a few tips on how to win votes from the established parties.

I only just remembered this guy survived a plane crash didn't he? He's had a hell of a life in recent years, though I do wish he'd stay off have I got news for you because it simply kills the show given he's public enemy number one. What was your impression of him when you met briefly?

"Conservatives retain Warlingham West

BBC South East's Chrissie Reidy tweets: "Conservatives retain #WarlinghamWest seat with 593 votes, #UKIP John Hill 319 & lib Dem Sarah Morrow 238"

WOW! I say again... WOW! That is off the scale.

EDIT:

An amendment: an earlier report that the Conservatives lost Broxbourne to no overall control was wrong, based on incorrect figures supplied to us. Apologies. The Tories have in fact retained control.

Sunderland Changes since 2010 local elections:
Lab -2.64%
UKIP +24.30%
Con -5.76%
Ind -0.14%
LD -14.57%
Green +1.53%
Swing, 1.56% from Con to Lab

This seems to show that UKIP are hurting the Tories twice as much as they're hurting Labour. But the big shift is from the former Lib Dem protest voters to the new partty of protest.

"There is a third re-count for one of the Hartlepool seats, with just one vote between UKIP and Labour."

He was just like the bloke in the pub that he presents himself as. What I did like about him was that he took an instant dislike to Lewes Lib Dem councillor, David "Basher" Neighbour. His handy tip for electoral success was: "Remember to attack all three parties. That goes down well with voters".

We met when BBC South East invited me on to the Sunday Politics show to debate the stadium issue with Neighbour. Farage was there for another item on the same show.

UKIP failed to take the Bransholme West seat on Hull City Council by just 46 votes, according to the Hull Daily Mail.

The paper tweets: Bransholme West result: Phil Webster HOLDS by 46 votes. Labour hold.

UKIP win in Peterborough

Frances Fox is elected for UKIP with 752 votes in Peterborough. The main parties are telling the BBC UKIP are "stealing votes from all over the place".

Rotherham Dinnington: first official Ukip win. (1,293 to Labour's 1,195). Ukip weren't even trying in Dinnington.

It's official: Ukip gain Rotherham West from Labour, ousting deputy leader Jahangir Akhtar. (1,567 votes for Ukip to Lab's 1,528)

Tories have lost Rotherham Sitwell to Ukip - 1,176 votes for Ukip to Tories 1,101.

Another Ukip gain in Rotherham Keppel: 1,658 votes to Labour's 1,258.

Another Ukip gain in Rotherham Valley - 1,387 votes for Ukip to Labour's 1, 387 (that's 5 Ukip gains so far; 1 Tory loss, 3 Lab holds)

Big questions for Milliband tonight. Will he still be leader by next May? I see him as millstone around Labour's neck and they would be better off junking him now and hoping for a boost. He has 'loser' written all over him, I'm afraid.
