Brighton Station Pre Match Last Night

Things that could be done is have marshals at each end of the platforms at Falmer to ensure the last 2 coaches especially on Brighton bound trains are used fully. For nights like last night have a special service between Brighton and Lewes running shuttle trains with the normal services starting and ending at Lewes, that way you would have more time to utilise all capacity.

It won't be done , which is the problem

Excuse me asking and sorry if it's been dealt with before, but if the task of the Clickerettes at the entrance to Falmer station is to ensure that the number of people on the platform doesn't exceed the number that can safely be squashed on to a train, does the fact that some coaches are left half-empty mean that the others are dangerously overfilled?

Last night at least one train left Brighton with plenty of space available in the last carriage.

Was that deliberately left for people getting on at London Road ???

Anyone else caught up in the absolute shambles? Hundreds of fans queuing on one platform only for the train to come in on the one on the other side, suddenly there is a surge from the back and all hell breaks loose. Those of us at the front (who had been their longest) ended up not being able to get on the train. Missed the first 20 minutes as a result. Asked a hapless female plod what the fudge they are playing at, and all she could say was 'erm - it was them at the back they pushed through! What are we supposed to do?' How about actually 'police' the crowd?

I've never been the biggest fan of Sussex Police but Jesus Christ this was incompetence on another level even for them!

Would have been BTP inside the Station dealing with crowd issues. Incompetence would be a step up for them

Why not start loading the trains as soon as the arriving passengers have left instead of waiting until a couple of minutes before the train is due leave and not properly filled?

This argument about needing trains for commuters doesn't wash with me. There are several hours between the game finishing and commuter services starting.
The first train leaves Eastbourne at about half five so surely it cannot be beyond the ability of southern to take 8 carriages from that, use them for football traffic and return them to Eastbourne ready for the men in suits to board in the morning. Do the same for Brighton's first train and you have the nice big trains needed.

Or even get them back to Lewes to be attached its not rocket science is it but S.R would no doubt have to do a feasability study on it for 2 years !!!!

For the umpteenth time this season, drove to Lewes, parked in town, got a train about 6.50 (fullish) and was in the ground just after 7. Afterwards, clapped the team off, queued for a while (not sure how long, maybe 15 mins) just behind the top of the ramp, then shuffled slowly all the way to the platform without stopping and was back in Lewes about 10.20 and home by 10.40. Transport has been great this season.

But what if everyone started doing that...?

There is clearly a problem and it is for the train company to solve the problem instead of saying what they think the causes are. People are not interested in why they have failed, they are just interested in results. They hold themselves out as experts in how to run a transport company, well its up them to prove it by coming up with solutions.

No you can't assume that. I do and I did travel by train yesterday. No problem at all, between Lewes and Falmer; underoccupied trains post-match between Falmer and Lewes (leaving a long queue at Falmer at a time when normally there is NO queue).

"Holiday traffic" is different. Yesterday was a working evening in May. There's little that can be done to conjure up extra rolling stock when it's being used to the full elsewhere on the network. But there's a lot that can be done (on any day) to improve the marshalling of people at stations.

7pm is not a full capacity time

Make everyone train into Brighton and then back out again. Or just walk Moulescoombe is not exactly far. (mobility issues excepted obv)

For Saturday 3pm kick-offs I get the 13:55 train from London Road. It's usually got 8 carriages and I usually have the front coach more or less to myself. Which is nice, but it points to severe shortcomings in the way the trains are loaded at Brighton station.

Got in the station at 1855, got on a train at 1940, missed first 15 mins of the game. The first train had TWO carriages, the 2nd one had THREE. There was a football match involving 30000 people, many of which we're travelling by train. I'm sorry but the incompetence shown was staggering.

7pm is not a full capacity time

It is absolutely the peak time - large proportion of commuter trains leaving London for Brighton (and other South Coast stations which would impact Flamer transport) is 5.15-6.45 approx, so 7pm is going to be the main time zone for London trains arriving in Brighton, Eastbourne, Worthing etc
