They used to be black but it caused a problem when trying to find them at crash sites, especially when in the sea.

They have always been red, the original being called Red Egg made by S. Davall & Son.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the concept go back a bit further ?

You get the term in computer programming as well, which I think comes originally from the very very early flight recorders.

A black box in programming terms is designing something with inputs and outputs so whoever using it doesn't care what's going on inside. You can then easily swap it out with a new one easily. Effectively a reusable component.

The colour refers to the "inside" not the outside. You can't see what's going on because it's dark.

Because the early flight recorders recorded data mechanically on film the inside of the box had to sealed dark and black to stop the film being exposed. Just like a camera.

That's where I understand the term to come from.

You are correct sir, however the ones used as we know them now, have always been red/orange. There's some that say the term black box comes from a quote referring to the red egg but I tend to agree with your post. Apart from the 'black box' all the on board computers are in black boxes.

Isnt it also true that all B777's have sensors that continually send data to Boeing whilst in flight? If true I'm guessing that they have a lot more data about the flight than they are letting on.

The Rolls Royce Trent 800 engines (fitted to this 777) transmits data back to the RR engine operation centre back in the UK; however, I believe this data is too heavy to stream in real time, so the data is dumped overland where applicable. If I'm wrong, RR may indeed have valuable engine trend data that the relevant investigation teams will use in this incident.

Interestingly I just checked out my own theory about the sensors and they do, but on this flight, Malaysian air didn't subscribe to Boeings sensor reading service as they track the same data themselves.

Looks like it's not as James bond as thought it was...monitoring systems excerpt from RR site below:

On the other hand, the Airplane Condition Monitoring Function (ACMF) reports are limited to 3kB, hence the acquisition systems need to work within this limitation. Future systems are being deployed to increase data volumes through wireless data transmission as the aircraft approaches the gate after landing. This will enable more data to be analysed, but will not be as immediate as ACARS, where data can be assessed well before the aircraft lands again.

So whilst mildly interesting, neither of our links tell us any more about this missing flight :)

Wall St Journal now reporting the engine tracking data has been monitored in US and plane flew on for five hours!

all this must be absolutely exhausting for you. thats my over riding impression. just accept that the world is full of random events. it will do you a hell of a lot of good mate.

the world has no random events.....all is in order, all a play of electromagnetics and energy in perfect equilibrium, harmony, balance, and chaos.......in a dance from causal events.

but you keep buying into the notion of coincidence and randomness.

the world has no random events..

Your obviously not married then.

not at all......but in this particular thread and subject is is either a cover up or a dissapearance.....due to the facts about plane tech i posted.

even some MSM agree too.

http://news.sky.com/story/1224575/missing-plane-malaysia-holding-back-details

Facts such as, "some parts of an aircraft float" ??? That's like saying some farts stink, it's not a thought provoking fact.
Your constantly looking for the things that are not there and trying to make things seem controversial.

"Even some MSM ( whoever they are ) agree, some, not all, another minority.
You really need to get a more rewarding hobbie or become a special constable it's a lot more constructive.

If nothing ever is random, then why is every human / planetary event not scientifically predicted.

It's amazing how you know all this stuff as fact, while the rest of us just blindly stumble along in ignorance. You must be a very clever man.

Did you take a lot of drugs when you were younger?

Indeed we could all benefit more from reading Your Stars in The Sun rather than reading the news reports. Everything is predetermined by the position of the celestial bodies at the time of your conception and birth and cannot be changed. Everything neatly categorised into 12 easy to read segments.

Here are a few examples.

The Kiev Post 13/04/14, Sagittarius : Do not be alarmed by a sudden build up of Russian troops at your workplace they are friends, however you may find yourself being shot at this afternoon.

The Free Syria News 13/04/14 Capricorn : You may be considering moving house at this time and today may be a good time to start packing as pro-Assad forces will be shelling in your area about tea time, don't forget those water purification tablets !

The Evening Argus
13/04/14 Pisces : Today is a good day to get your bicycle out of storage, give it an oil and a run out through town however, remember the new 20mph zones and be courteous to other road users, especially Leo's driving bottle green Range Rovers....
