If someone is being physically or verbally abused then it needs sorting. If someone who doesn't know me, comes from miles away and is situated at the other end of a football stadium from says he can see my holding a man's had or that I'm a bumder I really can't say I'd expect anyone to do owt about it for me. Don't disagree with that in general but a couple of minor points:

Firstly (and it may be to do with where I sit in WSU) I don't actually notice too many of these types. There's a mix of working and middle class fans up there to be sure because of the differences in pricing between middle and wings but most of the faces up there are long time fans from the Goldstone or Withdean. No one recoils in horror at these songs. In general they seem to be ignored.

Secondly there are limits. I don't think for a second, for example, that Auschwitz songs or monkey chants are acceptable (or Munich songs for that matter when playing Man U). The thing is these chants are largely self policing, certainly they are at the Albion. People will tell the perpetrators to shut up or even laugh at them. What we have here are people who want to promote their media / policing /political careers and draw the line for us in order to do so. They've drawn it too far to the left.

Have you ever thought you might be better off at hockey ? I'm serious, football hasn't suddenly morphed into an activity that (mostly) working class blokes go to watch after a few beers and use industrial language, its always been like that, if you don't like it, don't go.

I don't really think there are that many Albion supporters 'who are offended by ever so slightly risque football songs'. The problem lies with the hateful shit that gets spouted by a minority of cretinous individuals who take it upon themselves to threaten & intimidate folk who are just reasonably going about their business on a match day. Perhaps if the Police concentrated on acting when these incidents take place, we could all just get on with the type of day at the football that the overwhelming majority of supporters want to experience?

No it hasn't , and no-one's saying it that will change. All people have an issue with is genuinely homophobic or racist chanting. It's not really a football issue, it's a legal issue.

Why not if you believe that homophobic chants such as the ones mentioned are acceptable?

Forty years ago racist type chants were accepted as being banter and actually in most cases didn't actually reflect the majority's attitude towards the ethnic minorities - since then society's attitude in general has changed and quite rightly such behaviour is abhorred by most decent fans.

Of course there were some amongst those behaving in that manner who were racist in the same way that I am sure that amongst fans who engage in homophobic 'banter' there are some also truly reflecting their beliefs.

It is acceptable by many to call out things like, "get up you poof", to an injured player but would never dream of calling out, "get up you ******". In reality the only difference between the two is that one word is no longer generally acceptable as an insult whilst for many the latter still is.

Making excuses for those behaving in a homophobic manner is only delaying the time which will, I have no doubt, eventually arrive when throwing such insults will be considered generally unacceptable.

So by your reasoning shouting out something like, "you're behaving like a ******" would be acceptable

The person the insult was aimed at may be white and there certainly isn't anything to be ashamed of about whatever your skin colour may be.

No - it's the word itself that is unacceptable because of the connatations attached to its use - likewise the cry, "get up you poof" is every bit as insulting irrespective of the individual's sexual orientation.
