Can you name me one manager who got a team from a relegation zone in November to promotion the following season?

I've just checked the table for 5th Nov 2009 & we were in 21st place. He moved us up 40 places in the Football League.

Dowie did similar at Palace ( it was the same season, and they were 1 place above the bottom 3 ).

Interestingly, he's not exactly popular there given the manner of his exit.

Russell Slade got the same backing from Tony Bloom, and was by no means even close to the healthiest budget in that division.

Gus got us up because he managed to choose - for the most part - the right players for the style he wanted, who fitted in and played well. We played a style that was superior to everyone else in the division, and in a way which we hadn't seen before.

It wouldn't be 'any manager' that could have got us up.

At what point before the start of that season did anyone say '... we're going to get promoted, irrespective of who our manager is...'?

Hmmm. Don't disagree about the style Gus brought us, but you may want to reflect on how many times we got promoted to the Championship whilst at Withdean, with much less financial clout, and different managers. There are PLENTY of managers who would have got us up the year we made it under Gus IMHO. Of course, we'll never know for sure.

Yeovil Town was third from bottom on 31st Dec 2011 and Gary Johnson joined them in January 2012.

Well, I'm not going to trawl through the records of managerial achievements, but there are plenty of managers who have turned teams around from being relegation fodder to promoted.

Don't disagree about the style Gus brought us, but you may want to reflect on how many times we got promoted to the Championship whilst at Withdean, with much less financial clout, and different managers. There are PLENTY of managers who would have got us up the year we made it under Gus IMHO. Of course, we'll never know for sure.

That still doesn't justify the ludicrous contention that Gus had it handed to him on a plate, and it's a different point to the assumption that any manager could have got us up.

Indeed...You only have to look at our friends from Croydon...19th on 21st December 2003 and ended up going up to the Prem in the same season that we beat Swindon in Cardiff.

B W's reply was to the contention that Poyet was the best Albion manager of all time. Seems fair of him to counter this suggestion with an alternative name.

Mullery got us to the top flight. Gus didn't, although very close. So was Barry Lloyd. Gus is a good manager undoubtedly, but not our best.

Fair enough. Whilst largely agreeing with S's post, I have to say that 'handed on a plate' is a bit strong. I will say Gus was given fantastic backing by Tony and the board tho'.

Mark McGhee was appointed manager on 28.10.03 (according to Wikipedia). The table at the end of that day put us 3rd. We started the day 2nd, Barnsley beat Wrexham on the day to leap frog us. We were top when Coppell left (he was appointed Reading manager on 09.10.03)

The fact that two or three managers can actually be named shows how infrequent that achievement is attained. There is still the record 95 points, 8 wins in March 2011, and record number of weeks at the top of the division.
Of course fans can dislike him for the manner of his departure but to try and say any manager could have taken us as far as he did with the same resources is ludicrous imo. I don't think Bloom gave him a barrel of money in League 1 anymore than he is giving Oscar loads of money now. We also had 18 months at Withdean where we had to rely on loans to get us out of trouble, such as Painter & Barnes.

Thank you Acker79. Interestingly, MM was the ONLY manager that kept us in the Championship in the Withdean years. This was a great achievement, and should not go unrecognised. Coppell would have kept us up IMHO had he not been burdened by Tinselhead's appalling start to the season. Coppell - another manager who would have got us up in the year Poyet did IMHO.

McGhee did have a great record with us, but a lot of posters on Nsc denigrated him, even to the point of trying to call him a racist.
Coppell did get us out of the relegation zone when we beat Reading away but we slipped back into it. Obviously he had a mountain to climb when he came in.
