Life in Units from Blood Sport is an interesting album. It combines African guitar hooks and rhythms but has a very dark edge to them. The band are from Sheffield and so quite fittingly there's an industrial feel to the music. The singing is sort of Ian Curtis(ish) or a better comparison I suppose given his love of Fela Kuti would be David Byrne. The genre of music is called aggrobeat apparently - I'm guessing a deliberate play on afrobeat but reflects the antagonistic nature of the lyrics/singing. I can't think there's too many bands out there playing this kind of music so perhaps a bit unnecessary to invent a subgenre just for them. It sounds great though. Here's a preview with three of the tracks:

Brighton - In your face
Just brought Yo La Tengo and Kurt Vile both superb and amongst the best I've listened to this year.

If anyone hears of a spare ticket to Kurt Vile at the Concorde I would be very interested.

Lower Dens are supporting too, amazing live.

Yeah Yo La Tengo may make my top 10, one of the first bought this year.

I'm looking forward to everyone's top 10.

Really liking Money - The Shadow of Heaven. A Mancuian take on the whole ethereal lilting rock thing. Mournful but well with a listen , perfect soundtrack to these rainy days.

Rarities by Ane Brun

A double album special. First album lots of acoustic tracks , second album full of Scandinavian full sounds. Both big GROWERS!

On tour in the UK this month, she is absolutely fabulous, believe me.

An artist not to miss.

I can't believe this has sold out. I might be wrong but I don't think much of his most recent record (certainly in comparison to Smoke Ring For My Halo, anyhow) & he was playing the sodding Hope on his last tour. Where have the extra 600 people come from? I really enjoyed him on that tour though, I hope it translates to a bigger audience.

On a Kurt vile related subject - anyone know when War On Drugs might be releasing a new record? Their Haunt show lives with me to this day, an absolute blinder. Love both albums.

I know the other remaining MGMT fan posts on this thread so how are you getting on with their new long player. It starts off really well and the first half of the album is great but it seems to fade towards the end.

Really liking of Montreal as well. But, really, 2013 is all about Reflektor for me. This album has now totally won me over. It's an astonishing record.

Have not bothered with the new album after seeing a below average performance on later. Was waiting to see some positives reviews.

I find the second MGMT album to be a grower and far better than reviews would suggest. Not invested in the third however but that's not a conscious decision- more a case of not getting round to it.

Likewise. I think it's been a bumper year for music.

Agree. It's also the first time I can remember in a long time when established bands have released blockbuster albums: Arctic Monkeys, Daft Punk and Arcade Fire to name three. I am generalizing a bit but the past 10-15 years has consisted of stunning debuts and ever diminishing follow ups. Some cracking other stuff as well. 2013 will be a vintage year.

Yeah, you have prompted me to give it a listen via grooveshark tonight

It won't change your world but it's very enjoyable. Well, the first 5 songs are.
