I have been looking into learning to drive in the next few months and I have been browsing through a lot of companies and people, but thought I'd open it up to NSC to get some first hand experience. Anyone you can recommend? Anyone on here a driving instructor themselves?

I assure you I'll not venture near Newhaven, nor Burgess Hill. Not even Churchill Square ( ). And NSC will have plenty of forewarning when I'm taking my lessons. It's best for all if nobody else is on the road, just in case.

I'm considering a protective barrier around the entire perimeter of the car, especially to start with.

My brothers friend nick from driving ambition, nice guy, MASSIVE brighton fan, has a personalised plate with BHA on his car, passed me.

There's not much in it price-wise between the main companies like RAC / AA / BSM and all the independent private instructors. They've all passed the same tests and everything, so there isn't a lot to choose in most cases. The guy who taught me a couple of years back was brilliant, but he doesn't go as far as Hove. Some instructors line up discounts for your first x number of lessons, so that's something to bear in mind.

I've discovered that price wise it's all about the same, and the chap I'm thinking about contacting at the moment defected to his own business from BSM so I'm thinking he's a strong candidate, and there's a 10 lessons for 9 deal going on at the moment which seems decent. I did two-hours sessions, but my brother's gone for 1-hr lessons. It just depends on whether you've got the funds to pay 40-odd quid for the longer weekly sessions. I remember seeing quite a few instructors offering 90-minute lessons, which seems like a happy medium. The time will fly by, so it's like no time at all behind the wheel.

I had about 6 months of weekly 2-hr lessons, but that's because I couldn't learn on my parent's car since the insurance was too expensive. Still managed to pass first time though...just about.

Hmmm, where do you live? The main test centre around these parts is in Burgess Hill (annoyingly, which means I have to put up with spotty teenagers performing thirty seven point turns in my way every time I go to or from work).

The other test centres locally are Crawley & Goring by Sea.

When I learnt almost 3 years ago I was paying £19 an hour! Imagine it's even more than that now.

Ouch, glad I got it out of the way when I was 17. Still I guess that pales into insignificance when you get a quote for your first car insurance!

The average I've found is about £23 per hour, some a bit more and others £21 but I'd say £23 an hour is about the standard from what I've seen. I regret waiting until I'm 25 to do this...
